Re: sleeping position in pregnancy

I am 2 1/2 months pregnant with my first and have been reading all the books I can get my hands on.  All of them have said that it is preferable to sleep on your left side with a pillow between your knees and under your belly.  They have all said that sleeping on the left side is better than the right side but none have said why.  I understand about sleeping on my side but why is the left better than the right?  I would appreciate it if you could shed some light on this for me.

At this early point in pregnancy there is no research to support one sleeping position over another.  Sometimes late in pregnancy we may recommend sleeping on the left side to increase blood flow to the uterus.  At times however this is often disputed.
