Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Two years ago I had thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. I was treated with plasma infusion (didn't work), and then plasma pherisis (with steroids, vincristine etc.) I had 38 treatments of plasma pherisis. My platelet count dropped below 1,000. My hematocrit dropped to 5.0. I was very sick.
I was in the hospital being treated for 10 weeks. My hematologist said I shouldn't have a child because I could come out of remission. I'm an otherwise health 28-year-old woman. My husband and I would like to have a child. What is the general experience with women having babies after having this disease?

Your physician is right. Pregnancy complicated by acute episode of TTP can result in serious complications for mother and baby. However, there are numerous reports of successful outcome even though the pregnancy was complicated by TTP. In general should you decide to conceive you will have to consult with an obstetrician who specializes in high risk pregnancy prior to becoming pregnant. Pre-conception counseling will address all aspects of your care while you are pregnant.
