Treatment for green breast discharge

Posted By k.t. on April 22, 1999 at 12:45:13
About 3 years ago I noticed a greenish discharge coming from one nipple.  I went to see my ob/gyn.  I did have galactorrhea, but the green discharge was different  it occurred only in one breast and only in one duct.
Still, the doctor ran some blood tests, including prolactin and TSH.  She also took a slide of the green discharge and had it sent to the lab.  All tests came back normal, the cells on the slide were found not to be cancerous.  The doctor ordered a mammogram and this also came out ok.  She was thinking of doing surgery to remove the duct but changed her mind.  Her diagnosis was that I have either duct ecstasia or intraductal papilloma.
I am now concerned because I still have galoctorrhea (I stopped nursing my child 6  years ago), but now some of that discharge is becoming greenish instead of milky.  I think that now more ducts are affected.  I was on birth control pills for 6  years but stopped taking them 4 months ago.
I am concerned because my mother died of a rare form of breast cancer at age 42.  (I dont think she fit most of the risk factors:  she did had her first child at 19 and last child at 33, and had not reached menopause.)  I am 35 years old; my reproductive history is nearly identical to what hers was.
Should I get another opinion about these symptoms I am having?  I have not told my doctor about these newer changes yet, since it is not time for my annual exam.  This doctor has admitted that she is becoming more conservative and less aggressive  she says she now prefers a wait-and-see methodology.  Six and a half years ago she said she wanted to do a mammogram every two years because of my family history (my mother was not the only cancer victim).  Three years ago she said that she will not do any more mammograms until Im over 40.  I dont want to wait and see when my health could be at stake  but at the same time, I dont want any unnecessary procedures performed.  Friends and relatives are pressuring me to get a second opinion.  Is it possible that the cells in the green discharge could have changed?  Does this condition put me at a higher risk for carcinoma in the breast ducts?  Do I need to be concerned  or should I pursue this more aggressively?
