Twins

by TM__0, Sep 22, 1998 12:00AM

I've had several questions directed to me concerning twins. I am a nurse, and these questions seem rediculous to me, but I don't know everything. Is it possible for conception to occur twice, thus making twins different ages? Is it possible for twins to have different fathers? Thank You
Dear TM:
Twins are most commonly of similar age and single lineage. However, the answer to both questions is Yes.
The most dramatic demonstration of different fathers was a German lady who deliver a twin gestation wherein one twin was caucasian and the second twin was black.
Different gestational ages have occured from an ovulation one month after the first twin was conceived and from the pre-term delivery of one twin with delay of days to weeks before the delivery of the second twin.
To make a bad pun: if it is conceivable, it can happen.
