bleeding after miscarriage and HCG levels

by Chris__0, Nov 15, 1998 12:00AM

I satrted my miscarriage 12 days ago. based on my first ultrasound the Dr beleived all would pass on its own (Iwas 7 weeks). On my repeat ultrasound (one week later)all was clear.  Upon pelivic I was told my cervix was closed. I am still experienecing a little bleeding. (not much ast all) How long can I expect to bleed without a problem. They also said my HCG level was in the 500's (5 days after) is this abnormally high for just 5 days after?Thye had me repeat the HCG but I do not have results yet. The Dr said she is not woriied but I am.
Dear Chris:
Following complete expulsion of the visible "products of conception", there are early placental cells that are tightly attached to the wall of the uterus. As these are cleared slowly by the scavanger cells of the body, the hCG level declines and healing of the uterine lining occurs.
Bleeding for a week following the ultrasound that shows the uterus is empty is not concerning.
The pattern of hCG, a gradual fall, week by week, is more important than the absolute level. It can take 6 weeks for the hCG level to complete its fall into the non-pregnant range.
