Complete-rf expulsion of the visible "products of conception", there are early placental cells that are tightly attached to the wall of the uterus. As these are cleared slowly by the scavanger cells of the body, the hCG level declines and healing of the uterine lining occurs.
Bleeding for a week following the ultrasound that shows the uterus is empty is not concerning.
The pattern of hCG, a gradual fall, week by week, is more important than the absolute level. It can take 6 weeks for the hCG level to complete its fall into the non-pregnant range.
