cramping

I am a 32 year old female pregnant for the first time.  The home preg test was positive 3 days after my period was due.  My question is this:  I am having slight cramping in the lower abdomen...no blood and no morning sickness thus far...that may still come.  I have heard that cramping is not a good thing to have and desperately don't want to lose this baby.  The cramps are not severe but merely noticeable.  Also, what causes most miscarriages?  I am very worried but trying not to stress us both out...thank you
Dear Teresa:
Isolated cramping is not a bad symptom. By itself, it can reflect the growth of the uterus, sluggish digestion in the bowel, altered urinary function. Many women experience "mild discomfort" in early pregnancy. Symptomatic treatments (avoidance of things that trigger the sensations; local heat or cold; position; tylenol) is helpful.
Most miscarriages (70%) are the result of genetic maldevelopment and this cannot be reversed by any treatment.
There is no evidence that stress, diet, exercise, or daily activities provoke loss of a normal pregnancy.
