Hi Dorothy.  It is common not to have a period while breastfeeding, at least initially.  Many countries in the world use breastfeeding to prevent or delay pregnancy. Total breastfeeidng (on demand feeding over each 24 hour period with no supplements of water, juice, formula, etc.) usually provides a longer period of having no periods.   The fertility rate is lower during the time before you start to have periods again, but ovulation (fertility) can occur before you have a period.  The longer you breastfeed, the more likely it is that you will start bleeding and resume fertility.
