Are there any drug interaction concerns between Prozac and sedation medication for an egg retrieval? The meds I take for retrieval are 100mg demerol, 50mg phenergan. I will ask my doctor, but want to get more than one opinion. Thank you.

Dear cjp:
An anesthesia colleague provided me with a reviewon fluoxitine. There is an entity called the serotonin syndrome due to excess levels of serotonin. Fluoxitine works by increasing serotonin levels and some other drugs, such as anticoagulants, antiepileptics, antipsychotics, opiods, to name a few, can combine with the serotonin reuptake inhibors, thereby exaggerating serotonin levels.
Symptoms include altered cognition (diorientation), behavior (restlessness), autonomic nervous system issues (shivering, fever, rapid heart beat), and neuromusclar issues (loss of balance, muscle spasms). The article is built around a single case and no frequency is reported. The syndrome is described as "often self-limited that resolves quickly when the drugs are discontinued."
Keywords: serotonin syndrome
