high hcg levels

I am ONLY 4 DAYS LATE on my period,I phoned my doctor, and she called me in  immediately for a beta hcg and progesterone test. My results came back as 25 and 30,000. Isn't this a little high? My period last month was on time and very normal. The doctor has told me I must be 6-7 weeks pregnant.
I know that isn,t so. I have an ultrasound in a couple of days to find out what is going on. Also, my last pregnancy was diagnosed as twin fetuses, which I miscarried at 9 weeks.  Do these conflicting levels indicate
that there could possibly be more than one baby again?

                                          thanks
                                               Michelle
Dear Michelle:
Explanations for high levels of hCG include incorrect dates (a woman can conceive and have what to her seems like a normal, on time menstrual period), multiple pregnancy, and hydatidiform mole (the tissue that forms the placenta shows uncontrolled growth and overproduction of hormone). Laboratory error must always be considered: technican error, sample error.
When a laboratory result is unexpected, it should be repeated and other tests (in this case, ultrasound) that can help sort out the surprizing value need to be performed.
