one hpt says yes, others say no??

  On 12dpo, i took an equate hpt, it came out faintly ++, but on the same day i started my period or bled?  it was about the same as a regular period, it never soaked a pad it was mostly on the toilet paper or dripped while urinating.  Then on 14dpo, i stopped bleeding and did another equate hpt and it still said +++.  i am now on 16dpo and i have tried 3 other brands of hpt and all say ----.  Why would that have said + if i wasnt?  Could it still be to early for other brands to say +++?  What is the latest that i could take an hpt and trust that it is ----? could there be something wrong to where my hcg isnt increasing?  I cant get into my dr for a week so i am very nervous and curious if i am pregnant or not and if something could be wrong.  Please help and thank you so much for your time.  Signed,  confused, frustrated, and going crazy from thinking and wondering 24-7....tammy

Urine home pregnancy tests become positive 14 days following ovulation and are liable 17 days following ovulation (some patients will have a negative test on das 14, 15, or 16 and it becomes positive on day 17).
False-positive home tests are uncommon, but can occur due to other protein in urine. The most common reason for false positive tests is that the patient has taken the "fertility drug" hCG.
Given a positive test on day 12 and negative test on days 16, the possibilities are a "chemical pregnancy": a pregnancy that could only be detected by a chemical test, and it has now miscarried. Second possibility, false positive test with one kit and accurate measures with other kits.
A blood pregnancy test is the best way to resolve whether there is or is not continued hCG present.
