over 2 mos late period and not preg. what's up?

by Karina__0, Nov 16, 1998 12:00AM

I'm newlywed, normally quite regular.  I'm a little over 2 mos late, and not pregnant.  I had ob/gyn check up, it seemed
normal, but no real answers about why I'm so late.
Dear Karina:
Normal women will skip menstrual periods. When two menstrual periods are missed, a physician visit is logical. Pregnancy is the first diagnosis to consider. Contraceptive hormones can be a cause of absent menses. Weight changes, changes in exercise pattern, travel accross time zones, and stress (new home, new job) can all contribute to "secondary amenorrhea" (cessation of menstrual flow). Hormonal issues include thyroid disorders, prolactin disorders, and androgen disorders.
If menses are absent for 3 months and pregnancy test is negative, a test of the hormone environment with progesterone or Provera is the usual next step.
