postpartum bleeding

postpartum bleeding

: I had a baby four weeks ago by uncomplicated vaginal delivery.  One week after my daughter was born I ended up in the hospital with a bilateral kidney infection for which I received IV antibiotics and was able to come home three days later.  i am now experiencing bright red bleeding that has gotten heavier in the las two days.  I have also been experiencing "menstral-like" cramping.  I am breast feeding.  Could the bleeding and cramping be related to breastfeeding and contractions of the uterus or  should I be more concerned about postpartum hemmorage?

Hi Katy ... in working with postpartums .. it is true that you will bleed
some and have uterine contractions for awhile until that uterus is back in
its "normal" position .. but the bright red bleeding should not be occuring.
That should be more like the color of an ending menstration .. I would
call my physician if it is heavier than it was when you left after having
the infant .. it shouldn't get heavier .. only lighter and should cease
within 2 to 3 weeks .. post delivery.  It wouldn't hurt to go back for a
check-up early .. good luck with the new little one!  and I am SOOO glad
to know that people still breastfeed .. that is WONDERFUL!!

Dear Katy,
As the person above has indicated you should not be experiencing "bright red" bleeding.  It is difficult to assess
hemorrhaging, but I believe that you would be well aware...a hemorhage is a significant and fairly unquestionable event.
The breastfeeding would assist with diminishing uterine cramping and would not cause an increase or a change in the color
of the blood.  As the other respondent indicated if you continue with this you should seek the advise of your physician.
