pregancy and ultram

by Tara__0, Dec 09, 1998 12:00AM

I believe I am about 6 or 7 weeks pregnant and my doctor is now in the process of weaning me off the medication slowly. Starting today I only take 6 a day and next week 5 a day and so forth and so on. Will this cause me to have a miscarriage or for the baby to be born with disorders. If so I will quit cold turkey and find another way to deal with the side affects. I have been on the drug for over a year now so getting off of it isn't really easy. Thank you for trying to help.
Dear Tara:
Ultram is a narcotic analgesic. The database, Reprotox, has no information on use in early pregnancy. However, studies done in animals at very high doses have not shown any problems.
The Physician Desk Reference describes the agent as Class C: no human studies to guide recommendation.
In this situation, you must be guided by your physician who is aware of your total health needs.
