"hot" areas on my post-partum wife's body

by tom-c, Dec 15, 1998 12:00AM

My wife had a C-section on Oct 6th and gave birth to our baby boy.  Since then, she has complained of hot areas on her body.  For example if she lies in bed on her back, she gets really hot on her back.  Is this hormonal?  She has no other symptoms.  Any suggestions.  Thanks.
Dear Tom C:
I cannot explain this symptom. It is true that women experience a low estrogen state following delivery and this can give them hot-flush-like symptoms. Some women also experience transient thyroid dysfunction following delivery: that makes them feel warm all over.
I cannot explain why a lady would experience localized areas of warmth that localizes only to the back while lying down unless there is a plastic mattress cover or something similar that traps heat.
