sleeping position in pregnancy

I am 2 1/2 months pregnant with my first and have been reading all the books I can get my hands on.  All of them have said that it is preferable to sleep on your left side with a pillow between your knees and under your belly.  They have all said that sleeping on the left side is better than the right side but none have said why.  I understand about sleeping on my side but why is the left better than the right?  I would appreciate it if you could shed some light on this for me.
