ulcer diet

by Ane-O, Sep 02, 1998 12:00AM

My 13 yr old daughter suffers from an ulcer.  I was looking for a diet to help relieve the symptoms or not produce more symptoms.  I know the basic things like caffine etc.... but is their foods or food combinations that you would suggest for her to eat that will not produce the pain and symptom she gets!?  She doesn't tolerate milk very well & she avoids juice also.

Dear Anne :
Thank you for your question
Peptic ulcer disease is an erosion of the mucosal tissue of the distal part of the esophagus, stomach or proximal duodenum ( first part of small intestine) . Peptic ulcer disease is a benign disease and is usually caused by hypersecretion of gastric acid , use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs or Helicobacter pylori infection , a recently identified cause of peptic ulcers . In earlier days , PU was treated with bland diet and milk or if recurrent and severe, surgery. It has been found that milk has an ability to stimulate the secretion of acid ( rebound effect) and worsen the symptoms . The main stay of treating PU is medications and a BALANCED DIET eliminating any foods that cause individual symptoms. For treatment , antacids , H2 blockers are first line drugs and if taken adequately , help eliminate most symptoms .
Advise : keep a diary of what foods worsen the symptoms and try to avoid those foods.
Thank you again
Sincerely
L.M.
