vaginal closing in a young girl due to lack of estrogen

  I have a two year old daughter whose vaginal opening is closed shut.
  She is able to pass urine but complains of pain in the area.
  Our doctor has given us a cream to apply to the area which is said to
  contain estrogen.Our doctor has said the cause of the problem is a lack
  of estrogen.I would appreciate any information you might have on this
  subject, and any future problems this may cause. The doctor said this
  is not uncommon and it usually goes away with no future problems. like
  i said i would appreciate any information you might have

The female external genitalia have 4 folds , 2 on the outside and two , called the minor folds , on the inside . These , may have a central line of adherence . This is commonly seen in girls less then 6 years of age , usually with no symptoms .
The condition is associated with local inflammation due to low estrogen in the prepubertal period . Pooling of urine may cause the irritation to recur . There is a slight increased risk of urinary tract infections , and the adhesions tend to recur when stopping the cream application.
Once the labial area gets enough estrogen , ( i.e ;during adolescence) , the labial adhesions will disappear.
Topical estrogen is effective in 90% of cases . After the adhesions seperate , you need to apply a lubricating agent ( Vaseline as an example ) for 1-2 months . Do not seperate the adhesions forcefully . After seperation , your daughter will need to be re-examined by her pediatrician .
