what can cause a home pregnacy test to show postive, when it was really negative

What can cause a home pregnacy test to show postive results, when they are really negative?
Dear Giovanni:
Home pregnancy tests have instructions: if not followed, the test can show a false positive. The most common error is not reading the test at the time specified. The longer the reagents sit, the more the test can falsely appear to be positive for pregnancy.
hCG, the pregnancy specific hormone, is rarely produced by other medical conditions.
Protein in the urine can rarely cause a positive test.
