Baby Gifts

I don't know if this question is appropriate for this forum but if it's not I'm sure it will be deleted.

My DIL is having a baby shower in late June and I'm having a terrible time thinking of what kind of gift to get him/her.  They have registered with "Babies R Us" but I really wanted to get them something different, along with a few practical things.  My daughter is making a quilt and I have been thinking about making a wall hanging or a decorative pillow.  I'd like to make a traditional Navajo blanket or rug but I just don't have the skills.

Does anyone have any ideas for a present that is different - not the sort of things other folks will give?  Even suggestions on pillow making (decorative) or wall hangings would also be greatly appreciated.

My mother was Navajo and she could make almost anything.  Same with my grandmother.  I seem to have missed the "talent gene" when it comes to weaving.

Your idea sounds really good.  I don't know what the baby's name is going to be but maybe I can find some other words in both languages.

A Navajo blanket would be great if you knew how to make one, but that must take a lot of training etc. The prices of a real Navajo blankets run from 5000. upwards to 175,000.00 for an original chieftains blanket.  LOL That would be a mighty generous gift.

But here's another idea, if you know the name of the baby....
The baby's name in puffed wall hanging.  In different colors for each letter (or all same color, or print).  It's pretty simple, but sewing is required.  Double up fabric, Turn fabric so both good sides of fabric are facing inside. Cut out letters, extra large. Sew all edges, leaving about 2 - 3 inches open. Turn fabric right side out, press seams. Stuff with pillow filling, just enough to give it enough puff. Sew up opening. Attach small loop on upper back side, made of embroidery thread  (or something similar), so it can be hung on wall. Each letter of the baby's name would be made separately and can be hung at different angles etc.

Hi,

You could make by staining yourself a quilt hanger for baby's room to display the Navajo rug that maybe you can have made by a friend or somebody who specializes in it.  I had a quilt hanger on display on the wall for a long long time in my daughter's room cause her quilt was too pretty for baby spit LOL!!!   Satin balloons did not lend themselves to practicality in her crib .. then again, I was a first-time mom back then hee hee.  She just turned 18 in February ..... the time goes wayyyyy too fast!  but I still have her baby set all put away .. it was peach and green and yellow with gentle cream polka dots.
