Dog training question

I have an 8month old dachshund and when we first got him we took him outside for a walk, but then realized that the two days I work, we were unable to get him properly trained. (should have crate trained him but felt that 8 or 9 hrs was just mean) So we started him on wee wee pads which I absolutely HATE! Anyway, when we moved last month, he decided he wants to mark his territory all over the house because the old tenant had cats..a month later its still a problem........Sooooooooon as of Friday I watched that show on Animal planet called "Its me or the dog" & decided its time to train him to go OUT!!! I put his bed in the crate so theres only room for his bed...showed him it and told him to go to bed to warm him up to it I drew him in with treats (as Victoria did on the show) I think he actually likes being in there now. The first night the crate was out in the living room and alls he did was cry and bark, so I pulled the crate in our room and he slept like a baby :)   I only put his food down twice, once in the morning and once at night. Then about 10-20 min later I take him out....So far SUCCESS :)

Q1. Except my DF went out for like 3hrs because we knew he had to go.....and he finally he went after 3 and 1/2 hrs so I guess thats when he needs to go out is every 3 and 1/2 hours after he eats??

Q2. Today I lucked out because DF wasn't feeling good and came home really early from work....so the dog was in his crate from 6:00am until about 8:30am. BUT tomorrow, what do I do? The dog would go in the crate after he eats and goes out at like 7am until 3:30 when DF gets home.  thats EIGHT and 1/2 hours. Is that too long?

Q3. Next week he'd be left Mon & Tues....I know he will get trained with time and patience but so far he hasn't gotten it down yet its only been a couple days now.........How long would you say it might take him to catch on and be fully trained??

WED THURS FRI SAT SUN....I'm at home, so its just one day...but are those eight hours too much (possibly a little more if DF gets stuck in traffic or has to pick up his cousin from school).....I feel sooo bad. Alls he does is cry when were not there :(

I was SO mad yesterday! I took my mom out for Mother's day and before I left the house at 12 I took him out, he did all his duties...brought him back in and left him with DF. Well DF brought him to his mom's house while he went to go pick up his cousin and while he was gone, he went under the table and then again on the rug! (Which I did clean it before, I'm probably going to wash it again) SOO MAD!! I watch him like a hawk so that doesn't happen....but I obviously can't depend on anyone else to help me with the training.

Gokuangel-  That's a good idea....its  probably fun for him, I might have to give that a try.

Margypops-  I actually found a little tooth of his on my bed awhile back (red sheets at the time)  he loves to munch, he hates wet food I think just because of that, so we give him hard food....Hopefully its just a phase like you said that babies go through!

Sounds like you are getting there and using all avenues , hes also getting plenty of attention and thats a good thing ..As hes getting the walks and fun you describe he probably wont mid a short while in the crate whilst you are gone ...at that age they are losing their baby teeth so they do chew and gnaw more like babies do , once the other teeth come in it may not be so bad ....

If he peed on a rug or carpet descent it IMMEDIATLY!!  with spray or something he will keep going there otherwise!! and if you take him out and he dont potty make sure to re-crate him for 30 mins i know its sounds harsh but he has to learn that outside is potty time so if you take him and he dont go re-crate him wait a bit and then take him again when he goes praise him and let him have treats and then let him play on the carpet! I was taught in the potty training class it seems to work Lucky finally goes and he stops his whining and he gets to play!
as for the sniffing its hard epecially for me hes used to one space my moms house bk home so i have learned his slow motion sniffing is signs his very fast hyperactive sniffing is just playing watch out for it you should be able to tell soon when i see the slow mo act i know leash and outside pronto!! and he goes asap!

Lucky likes to rip paper too i bought him a Kongo toy today gonna see if that helps! i got 2 and filled em with wet food and treats i so hope it helps the chewing is crazy now!!

He loves to roam and thats what usually gets him in trouble! So far he's been doing great though, Ive taken him out as much as possible and so far no accidents, except he did purposely pee on the rug by the door once ( I didnt realize that when I went to do laundry at MIL house she let the cats go on the rug, so he was probably just marking his territory- I firmly told him no and then took him outside) I decided to put him in the crate only when im gone for a FEW hours.. Anymore then 4, I just dont feel comfortable with it. & he's held it. He likes to rip up paper so that didn;t work out. As for roaming, I take him out every hour or two so he gets lots of excercise and when he comes back in, he's ready to just relax so he either lays on me or his bed.

The only thing now, is the sign....he hasn't quite told me yet when he has to go ....I just watch him closely and take him out every chance I get especially when he sniffs around. Sometimes he goes to the door, but sometimes its because he wants to go out and play and he doesnt end up going potty at all. So I hope soon he gives me some sort of signal!!

I will agree that there is a place and time for crating it can be a good thing like a lot in life it gets overdone ...but you have a handle on it, and you will have one happy Dog...

I'm home all day with my dog so i let him out as much as possible he just stays in my bedroom or pc room with me and he can roam around the room just not the house! I only crate him at night and when i go to the gym which isnt too long my class is just hour and if DH is home he will usually take him potty then let him roam some!
Im with you April i cant wait till mine is older i would love to just turn him loose and let him run all over the house but unless im doing chores in the kitchen hes not allowed!

I do that too Anxious my Lucky is my baby i dont have any kids so i spoil him rotten im trying not to make him a brat though! Hes a very good listner though when we tell him NO or to do something he will! He learned how to sit in just 5 mins!

I would let DF mother let him out but she goes against our wishes and gives him people's food, and he ends up with diarrhea which we are left picking up, not her. She wouldn't be able to just let him out for a walk, she would take him with her and put him on her porch when he wants to go outside and she lets him go pee and poo on a wee wee pad out there, which I've gotten rid of all mine because I'm done with those, I want him trained to go out. Having the weewee pads around just confuse himHe only learns bad habits when he's there...so I try not to bring him whenever I go. So, I need to ask around and see if anyone would be willing to do it. But anyway.. Im just so conflicted about the crate thing....I think its mean but then as you said Teko, it took just a week and now she's trained and doesn't go in the house. We've gone this long without him being trained...so what's another month.....then I will be home to train him......I dont know!

margypops- I know what your saying, I see him just as he is, he's an animal who is supposed to be free not caged up. When we got back in he went to his other bed (he's got two beds-his favorite is in his cage) The other bed he's not crazy about but he occasionally will lay in it,  Anyway, he went to the other bed and started to scratch at it like a madman, I think it was his frustration of wanting to come in when I wouldn't let him because I needed him to go pee first. (cause he jumped on me and then tried to pull me to the front door) So, I do the same thing with him, he's like my child, I talk to him like he's a baby...and he's spoiled like one too I just cant help it, he gives me those puppy dog eyes sometimes. lol

* hours is pretty long for the dog to be stuck in a crate. Is there anyone that can go over and let the dog out temporarily to go potty in the backyard? I do that for a neighbor, as their dog is being crate trained. All puppies will cry when they are alone, but if you don't baby them too much they'll stop. They just have to get over the first initial loneliness after a while. My puppy cried for a few days and then stopped, as we have her crated downstairs. I didn't want to start a habit of having her in my room, which wouldn't be good in the long run.

I did the crate thing and it took about a week. I know it seems mean but once they are allowed to go in the house, you have lost the ballgame so to speak. I would crate her at night, which is no big deal cause they sleep anyways right. I would let her out in the am, walk her to go pee, feed her and about 20 min later take her back out to poo. Some poo in the morn or in the eve. She did it in the morn. Then I crated her again and would take her out after about 2 hrs. I only let her out when I was playing with her, training her or working with her somehow. If I had to leave to go to work I crated her. She lived thru it. It took about a week and then I made a point to praise praise and praise some more when ever she went out and did her business. To this day she gets a treat after doing her business. Then if you are still concerned, gate off the kitchen area and leave her in there when you work. If she does have an accident it is easier to clean up but dont scold her for having an accident while your at work. It seems mean I know but it is the most effective. My dog to this day will not under any circumstances go in the house. :)  I have seen people scream at their pet and even spank them for soiling in the house and I personally think THAT is mean. So happy training! They learn fast.

ohh you love him a lot I can tell you are a good Mom' yes they do like time to go, I being an animal lover like you always try to think how the dog /animal may feel, I also do it with children, I walk in their shoes, where I live now has a lot of dogs shut in yards , dont go out, dont go inside ,all they do is bark...frustration, same as dogs that chew up, frustration, they cant tell us how they feel, we have to guess, dogs pee all over , squits at a time they dont empty their bladder in one 'go they leave a trail for other dogs .Now I like the gating idea best, thats what we did, we put a gate across one part of the kitchen so he wasnt enclosed but couldnt get out and a floor thats easy to mop up I had 5 baby beagles in an area like that ,many moons ago, the Dh's job was to mop up each day ...we had found a beagle mom been dumped , and we took her in she had 4 healthy babies and the DH had to rescusitate one ..all pedigree, we sold them to good homes ...kept the mom ..o ho I am hijacking this thread lol

lol "dogs like to go and pee outside, thats what I mostly did" I know what you meant, at least I hope :D  So, yesterday there were NO accidents because DF spent the day with him from 8 oclock on and he took him out to relieve himself and play....Then when I came home he already ate, so I took him out again and he would only pee, would *not* poop I tried for 4 hours going outside and back in. At 11:00PM he still would not go, so then it was bed time.....
He gets into trouble at night like your daughters dog, so we now put him in the crate and he sleeps throughout the whole night...then I get up at 4:30-5:00 took him out, he Poo'd right away, and peed......BUT then after he ate he WOULD NOT go peee.........AHHHH.. Usually he pees shortly after he drinks water...but I walked him for an hour and 1/2 this morning I told him "Go Pee-Pee" and he sniffed around and walked in circles like he usually does right before he goes......but nothing! I was really hoping he'd go before I left for work. I gated him off in one particular area of the house, hoping I come home to no accidents, but I wont be upset if he goes, I can't expect him to hold it for that long.....

Do you think he needs more time to pee? I mean his poop schedule so far has been about 3hours after he eats....so idk, do I need to get up earlier so he has more time to pee.....im just confused because before he peed right away....I almost think he was just being stubborn.

He is soooo cute, he comes over to me and jumps up when hes ready to go back in. I waited though and waited and waited.............ahhh so frustrating!

I guess I could ask her if I can bring him to work, I actually will be home 24/7 soon because of the baby, and he will be SOOO happy to have me home all day with him. Im thinking I wont be working as of Mid to late June and then he will have ALL of my time :)

When I trained my pups one was a black and tan dachsund..I did put them onto paper, you know I think that the crate for small periods of time is okay , I dont imagine that would hurt them, I know my daughter put hers in at night because she would start chewing stuff, so the dog went in all night, then was in quite a bit during the day ,it got so the dog would be fighting not to go in it..It was the cause of some words between her and I ...You dog is 8months old so it shouldnt take long do you put her outside in the yard aswell, dogs like to go and pee outside ,thats what I mostly did .How about walking,I was always one to take the dog out so I would give her walks ,short or long and let her empty her bladder...thats the best way ,dogs love to be out, the sad ones are the ones that dont get walked at all .Good Luck

You never know, you could ask the people if it would be ok to bring your dog to play with her dogs, if her dogs are friendly enough. They could stay outside while you babysit. At least he wouldn't be as lonely. It can't hurt to ask her. I don't think you'd treat a dog the same way as a baby.
I don't suppose you can watch her kids at your house, either? If you were lisenced as a daycare provider you could run your own business out of your home, which is nice and you get a lot of tax credits, etc. That way you could take on more kids, too, if you wanted and make more money! Just a few thoughts I'm throwing out there. :)

What I do with my puppies is they sleep together in a large kennel with a thick blanket and soft toys, at night. If I have to shut them up during the day I put them in the kitchen which has linoleum, with their food, water, toys and a bed. That way they can stretch their legs more and the rest of the house is safe from any possiblel accidents or chewing something.
I can't wait till their older, though, and I can trust them more to just let them have the run of the house! I probably won't feel comfortable with that till their around 2 or so. I used to be able to leave my older dog with the run of the house when I was working for 7 hours or so and he never had an accident. But as puppies or young dogs I just wouldn't trust them just yet.

I thought it would be too long, my mom said they used to put paper down, so I dont know if I should maybe try to gate him in an area of the house (not the crate but an open area) and just put paper down? I wish I could take him with me but I babysit 4yr old twins and they have two golden retrievers, I dont think the parents would go for that at all....just because im supposed to be watching her kids and she told me over the phone once that some lady that had a baby said she would watch the twins, but she declined the offer because she didnt want to worry that if something were to happen to the ladies baby and her kids at the same time she'd go for her baby first of course......I think it would be the same for my dog.

What do you think about the paper idea......I really hate the crate to begin with and would hate it myself.....thats why I havent done it while I go to work yet, just cause I feel its cruel...

Kitty - Its just big enough for his bed so he can stretch in it, he has lots of doggie toys, we do have a yard for him, we take him out all the time...its just getting him to stay in the yard thats the thing right now, we have dogs next door and he always wants to go over there and explore in the woods...he knows his name, but only comes when he wants so far.

April- I didnt realize there was a Dog Forum, I will try and ask over there!
& He gets tons and I mean tons of attention, and hes always bringing me the ball to play with him.....he sleeps alot too on and off....we just got him neutered.....it seemed to calm him maybe a little but not much at all.   Thanks...yes hes adorable..I love him to pieces.

You might get more posts to your questions if you post on the Dog Forum. There's a lot of expereinced dog owners over there.
I'm not sure what to tell you. It does seem awfully long to keep him in a crate/kennel all night to sleep and then all day while you all are at work. Can someone come over to let him out at least at lunch time and let him stretch his legs?
Do try to exercise him and play with him a lot to tire him out and give him attention when you are at home.
I'm glad he's not marking anymore. Getting the carpet cleaned with a pet enzyme can help remove the smell of both the marking and the previous owners cats.
Also, getting him nuetered can help calm hiim down.
Have fun with your new puppy! I love duchshunds! I think they're adorable! :)

What is a crate? These wee pads could be bad news as when he gets older he may wee on othr things that are on the floor like mats!!  If these crates restrict him moving around and space is limited that he cant run around that wouldnt be good for him.Do you have a secure yard for the little guy to run around and access to leave and enter the house? do you have any doggy toys and chew bars for him?
