Grad gift

Any sugestions for  a graduation gift for my daughter who has completed her teaching degree after getting her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.  We didn't get her anything after the first degree, so would like to get her something nice.  When I ask her she just says she doesn't need anything. She has not yet landed a teaching job, so is paying bills and student loan as a waitress.

Thanks for all the information and tips. Toronto has a small airport downtown vs the International Airport, which would be very busy.

Flying in a small airplane in good weather under what are called "Visual Flight Rules" (VFR) is extremely safe, contrary to popular belief.

And a great deal of FUN!

You need nothing special to begin dual instruction (with an instructor).

It is a tremendous confidence builder.

I found females to be the very best students. Doctors were the very worst. I couldn't tell them anything. After every explanatory statement I would hear the words "I know". Then they would proceed to take the controls and put the airplane into a situation that would force me to take it from them. Arghhh!

It is best to take lessons at a small field without a control tower, because much time is wasted otherwise waiting in que for takeoff.

At a small field it typically takes from six to ten hours until the instructor permits the student to solo. At a congested field (in a busy city area) this may go up to twenty hours because of traffic, so a small field is most cost effective.

Most students cannot handle more than an hour a day of instruction.

The FAA has many publications that can be read that explain things. There are also audio visual programs available at flight schools.

An organized school may have a precise curriculum. There are, however many private instructors who own their own planes that are more informal, who are just as good.

Before a person "solos" they must submit to what is called a "third class" physical by an FAA certified physician. Your family physician is not qualified. The place where you take lessons will direct you to one. These run from $60 to $75. When the flight instructor signs the medical certificate it becomes a temporary pilot's licence and permits the student to fly alone (without passengers) under the supervision of the instructor (each flight must be approved).

Airplane rental is wet (with gas) ot dry (without gas). A small C-150 (2 persons) will rent from $70-$80 per hour. A C-172 (four persons) will rent for from $100 - $125 per hour. Instructors charge from $25 - $40 per hour, usually about $35.

You do not need to take any sort of written examination until you are ready to take your private pilot's examination. It takes a minimum of forty hours (less in an organized program) to qualify to sit for the private pilots practical exam. You must also have passed the written examination.

Basic flying is comprised of three major areas:

(1) Learning to control the airplane
(2) Learning the "rules of the road". Airspace is complicated these days.
(3) Learning to communicate. The meaning of the various frequencies, and what frequency to use to talk to who when you are in a special area. Sort of like learning to use a telephone book.

Years ago, when life was more pleasant and the trees were filled with sugarplums I owned two airplanes, a single and a multi-engine. The multi-engine was named "The City of New Orleans".

I hold a commercial ticket with land, seaplane, multi-engine, with rotorcraft (helicopter) and instrument endorsements, as well as a flight instructor endorsement. I am ATR eligible, but never bothered.

Although the C-150 is the most common aircraft to learn on if you have the money I recommend a C-172, which is an extremely safe airplane. Not that the 150 is not safe.

I am biased against learning in Piper aircraft because they have a low wing and you cannot see all the scenary, nor get all the clues that are helpful when learning. That being safe many students learn with Piper aircraft and have no trouble.

I know what you should give her.

A package of pre-paid flying lessons.

When I used to flight instruct I found women were the most enthusiastic and best students.

Even if she does not go on to get her pilot's licence you will have given her an experience she will cherish for the rest of her life and she will develop self-confidence and esteem.

She will forget about the vacation twenty minutes after she gets home.

Thank you for the very kind words and the suggestions.  The vacation is what we have been thinking.  All inclusive resorts seem popular with the students.
