Have you ever participated in drug studies for extra income?

My oldest daughter has been participating in a drug study. She went to this allergist and volunteered to be a gunea pig for money. She made 900.00 total. So she went to her last ov on Friday. The doctor looked in her mouth and told her that her uvual was not staying up and the left side of her soft palate was not working right. He was concerned that the study had been compromised because it was to be done on only healthy patients and was concerned that this had not been noticed before now. She asked him what that meant and he said he had only seen that happen in people who had had a stroke or people with brain cancer. So, now they will do a ct and an mri to investigate further. She nor the doctor know if she has been getting the placebo or the real drug! Now she is having nightmares of an early death and is all worked up over it, naturally.  I too am upset of course. I am wondering if it could be a side effect of the drug she has been participating for. No one will tell her if it is or it isnt. I do not think it is worth the risk, because you sign your rights away! What say you?

I was in a drug study years ago for an asthma drug, and when it was over, I actually got to go to New York with one of the principal investigators involved in the study.  We gave TV interviews to different news outlets across the country...he, from his perspetive as the MD, I from the patient perspective.

Im glad to hear the ENT thinks it is nothing.

I have done a test in the past on my sons but all they had to do was take some nose spray to stop allergies that they already had and record what happened through out the day. It was minor and I only got $100 for it.

My da went to an ENT, yesterday. They scheduled an appointment for her on the 20th to run a test and check out her esophegus and stuff. The ENT thinks it could be damage from when she had her tonsils out a few years back, and said if the test does not reveal something, we will assume she is fine. (Hoping).

red, thankyou for that info, I was not aware of that and it helped me understand much more. It helped calm my nerves.

She has an appointment with an ENT tomorrow afternoon, so we hopefully will no more at that time. I'll keep ya posted.

It's a double blind study they are doing if the doc doesn't know if it is a placebo or not. That's the only way they can tally if any symptoms are not being 'thought' up by the patient.
Many of the drug companies do this and they usually test on animals for up to 5 years to see if any symptoms happen in 1st generation and then subsequent generations. only problem with that is they are animals and can't tell you if they feel nauseaus, dizzy, what ever. So they then up it to humans.
I doubt seriously that your daughters issue is related to the drug/placebo she is taking. My left side of my soft palate and uvula does not move as it should. I have a minor birth defect on my left side and that is what mine is caused by. It is amazing how many people are not perfect in their anatomy.
I guess the only way she will know if it related to the drug is after the trials are finished and all the other patients data collected. If it is a symptom of the drug they may opt to produce it or not. If it is a brain cancer thingy, I doubt seriously it would have been caused by the drug. Brain cancer develops over a longer period of time.
If it did happen to give her a stroke I am sure she would have at the time ( or others would have) some slurred speech, and lose of movement for a short time. Even a mild stroke can go unnoticed but generally the patient will have some anecdotal symptoms they did not relate at the time of the stroke.
If it did give her a stroke, again this will be used in the study and noted as a side effect and again they will opt to use it or not.
The only good thing about this study is that it will help others either to have a new drug that works or it will show the people making the new drug that it is either too risky, or it doesn't work. I think you know what I am trying to say!
I do feel for you both. It is not pleasant to not know what is wrong with our loved ones. I am sure it will all get sorted out soon.
Cheers

I never have even been asked, but I watched a tv show..two and a half men...it was supposed to be comedic, but Alan did that to make money and they had him looking awful and miserable...after that alone...I think I'd say no thanks.

teko, I'll pray that your daughter is ok...hang on tight...she'll need a huge hug and some hefty mom support...

I agree with you that the doc is the middleman, and am rather upset that she did something this risky to begin with. But doc should not be using words like brain cancer without testing to confirm first. Poor girl will end up having a stroke before its all over and possibly me too! lol

Im so sorry to hear about your dad..

I dont think the doctor will ever know if she was given a placebo or the actual drug.....My dad was going to do a research study with brain cancer at one point.....the doctor was just the middle man who administered the stuff and wrote down the findings.

You will feel better once you are with her......

Thank you, as usual yu are so informed. I think hers is a class 1, because yes, she had to be healthy to do it. I understand the doctor is concerned and thinking they missed something because in his words ( you are definately not healthy). I will check out the site. Thanks again!

Well I am familiar with medication studies as the glycine I take is in Phase II FDA study. However, due to fact that I could not tolerate all known antipsychotics I am authorized to take it outside of study and also its available (although it really shouldn't be) for order. If I were in the controlled study I could get a placebo or worse yet an agent used to worsen psychosis such as ketamine. I can't post the link to actual studies but clearly I do not approve of this aspect of it.
Those are Phase II studies to test the medication in people with the disability or disease it treats to see if it helps. In Phase I studies which is the first level they are tried on healthy people to test their safety profile (after they've been tried on animals). If any adverse side effects are noted in enough people the study is discontinued. There is a high level of confidentiality but if a person experiences an adverse side effect at that point it can be broken (but they must discontinue being a participant in the study at that point). If you have concerns go to the FDA's website and it will say who the proper parties are to contact about this.

Thank you and no the doctor doesnt even no. It comes in two viles. They have a code #. So all she knows or the doctor knows is the code #. Regardless, she was told upon signing up that she was assuming all risks. At least they will pay for the testing and yes they are sending her to an ent. I asked her the same things. You no, if we knew the name of the drug to c if anyone else had this. The doctor seems more concerned that the study has been compromised. Jerk!

I've never personally participated in a drug study, but I have SIL who had gotten hepatitis C from blood transfusions and the drug SHE got cured her hep C so they aren't all bad, but I don't think I'd want to do it just for the $, on chance that the drug would have adverse affects -----

Some people have more stamina than *I* do.

teko - I hope your dau turns out well and that you will keep us posted on her progress.

Those are some odd symptoms, can she go to a ENT? Will she ever be able to know if she was given placebo or not? I will keep you and her both in my prayers, I think its horrid of them to suggest stroke or brain cancer without ruling out simpler explanations first. I dont think I would participate in a drug study, They probably would not take me anyways since I have thyroid problems, and have had so many female problems.  I will tell you Teko no matter how old we get theres nothing like Moms voice to calm us when we are frightened, so just listen, reassure, poor girl and poor you Id be going nuts if that was my daughter, Cherie

I know! She is only 29 and has 3 children. I was against her using herself as a guinea pig in the first place, but hey! They think Mom is stuffy on stuff like that and she needed the money! My concern is that it may be a side effect of the tested drug. I seriously do not think she has brain cancer and I know she has not had a stroke. To put her thru all this is to me, insane and makes me angry. I have been on and off the phone trying to calm her for two days now. Im going to Oh around the 15. Hopefully, will no more then.

Swampy is in a long term medical study of men's health...but not a drug study.

Essentially, people call him up every so often and ask him to do things..like "how would you like an MRI?" or "you don't need all that blood do you?"

The general rates are $100 / hr for answering questions, and for an MRI its about $200, for blood its about $75 per, most studies require multiple draws.

Its not for income, its actually kind of fun.

I was thinking something much worse........He should be turned in for his unprofessionalism........Hopefully everything will be okay.  My dad had brain cancer and never had any of those symptoms......not even close.  That part confused me.     sara

I am appalled that the doctor would say such a thing without something to back it up. I think that was so unprofessional on his part. I will keep ya posted. Thanks for your concern.

Jolly, I hear ya! How are you doing anyway?
