Oh I'm sure it is very quiet but how else do you warn someone when they are about to hit you? I have avoided many accidents by honking when someone is about to move into my lane and hit me.

Is it illegal to honk at someone who is about to hit you by moving into your lane? I wouldn't be able to live in a place where honking isn't allowed :)

No honking here, it's illegal. $100 fine if your caught! But it is legal to verbally abuse them...lol

Honk? Naaaah, why honk when you can rush the engine or just slightly slide innocently closer? People here in the country run halfways jog anyway.

I honk if they haven't moved within a few seconds. I used to be much worse when wasn't driving my son around. I never honk if I am driving through "rough" areas as I don't fancy being shot at LOL

When I first saw this thread in my "home" page (before I made my first reply) I thought honking and I thought the sound that occurs when one blows their nose.

I prefer hooters to honkers lol. 'Honking' down this way refers to throwing up

I never honk, I have a perfectly good finger, lol...Seriously, I listen to music and sing in the car, so I'm totally chilled for the most part in the car.  IF I encounter a problem I usually yell in the car to no one but myself.

This reminds me of something brought up in a church sermon. I don't remember what the sermon was, but that's beside the point.

There are about three different kinds of honks people give.  There's the short honk that says I'm a little annoyed, please move.  Then there's a slightly longer honk that shows more anger.  Lastly there's the "wrath of God" honk reserverd for when you're really angry, such as someone cutting right in front and nearly causing an accident.

(I'm sure at that time the bird is a likely option to use along with the honk)

My worst road rage incident involved a roundabout ( I HATE THOSE THINGS ), lots of horns, a short car chase, a lot of yelling, and a whole FLOCK of birds flying around.

I don't even know who was in the right, if there even is such a thing after tempers get that flared.  I felt awful about, and stayed away from that intersection for a long time!

So to the bird fans, what do you do at night???

It depends on where you live. In Barbado, you honk to say thank you.

In Massachusetts, there is a short honk, which means "Get out of my way", and there is a long honk, which means "Get out of my way, YOU JERK"

I honk when it's appropriate (which seems to be all the time).

It seems most of us are pretty polite on here, lol.
I don't honk very often. I do if I see them sitting at a light looking down and didn't notice the light turn green but I just give the horn a tap to get their attention. The only time I blared my horn was when I had to slam on the breaks to avoid someone who almost hit me and didn't seem to see me!

I hate it when people get so angry and impatient though. There's a lot of road rage out there. I watched a woman blare her horn and scream and curse at someone as she was turning in front of him (in an intersection) even though he had the right away, not her! She apparently was mad that he got in her way! They almost collided! He just ignored her screaming and kept driving. I think it makes people look bad when they lose control like that.

I give them time then I honk

I try not to, but if people are obviously not paying attention, then they deserve a honkin'!

I retired my finger, but admit that I used it a lot as a teenager.

I also like the evil eye, or accusatory pointing, if the light and conditions permit!

I read this today and I see that some cities around the World  have banned honking, I found Florida honks more than California ,England also honks and puts their finger up at you!! Apparently Cairo is the Honking Capitol, ....Mumbai (that just got hit by terrorists ) has banned honking in parts of that city. With nearly one Billion drivers on the roads they are looking to ban it more.

I  give the "evil eye" .. I like the "evil eye" .. that works better usually  -- the other one is to wave and get all excited pretending you know the person and they usually get all embarassed thinking they know you LOL!
