How badly is the mortgage crisis where you live?

I live in a deed restricted area. Two houses to my left and one to my right and on across the street. This is just immediately around me. You drive thru the area and it would seem that one out of 5 homes are sitting vacant. Now keep in mind that a deed restricted area means you have rules that you have to abide with in order to live in the area. If you park your car in the grass next to the driveway you get a citation. The banks foreclosed on these homes and they have been left if terrible disaray. The pools have not been kept up, the grass and shrubs are nasty. If a bank forecloses on a home and takes it back would it not be the banks responsibility to maintain the homes? Or why could they not rent the homes out just to keep the maintanance on them up? This has become a real issue here. What about where you live, do you have these issues as well?

It doesn't seem to be as bad here as some places. We do have some houses that have foreclosed but I also watched one house just down the street sell for $200,000 (about what we paid for ours 4 years ago). Not bad for an older house. We would like to sell too but are going to wait and watch things for awhile.

We have a house across the street empty, the one behind me is empty, and weekenders live in the two that are next to me. Sometimes living in the country has its perks.

But the two that are empty have been for about 3 years now and show no prospect of selling. Haven't even seen anyone looking at them.
