New Look Forum

So this is off topic. Probably will be deleted. But what the heck. I may as well write it up anyway. Do people really care about stars next to their name? Are they important to anybody at all? Just curious.

The second and most important question. This thing of rating answers. Would it stop you replying, if you plucked the courage up to make a post in reply to someone and they picked somebody elses post as better than yours? I just find it may stop some shy people wanting to make posts if their answers and never considered good enough.

The stars we can class as a loyalty thing. Long time members. Doing what they can to help people. Lot of good work done by a lot of people. Just be honest with your answer as long as the post survives on the forum.

Hi everyone -

Thanks for your feedback.  I've read and responded to the thread in Suggestions, and will copy and paste some here.

You all raise some different concerns here than were raised in Suggestions.  First, someone mentioned reporting your own post.  Some people do report their own posts.  It may be that they realized after posting that they gave too much personal info, and want that removed, or they Google their user name, and their personal questions here show up, along with all the posts they have on other sites, and don't want it connected.  Others post twice by accident, see it after it posted, and report the second one as spam.  It can be beneficial to some members.

Also, members who post a lot are not always "obsessed" or "messed up."  We have women on bed rest during a high risk pregnancy that post a lot, people undergoing major treatments for cancer, hep C, etc., and are too sick to work, but need something intelligent, fun or supportive to get through their long days.  Others like to offer support and information, and some just really need it themselves.

I can also promise you that we don't have too much time on our hands.  We are not making things up for any reason - shock value, to be vulgar, to get more posts, whatever.  We have 300+ forums and hundreds of new journals and notes each day to moderate, plus answering how-to questions, technical support and customer service in PMs, emails, Suggestions forum, etc.  We are too busy to even think about having too much time on our hands lol.

If you are not comfortable answering something, don't.  If you are concerned that it's fake, let us know, and we can check it out.  The Questions for You are suggested for you simply based on questions you have answered in the past.  If you don't want to answer any of those, that's fine.  You can change the subject areas that you receive suggestions for.  All of this is up to you.  If you are uncomfortable with receiving PMs from people you don't know, or just want to receive them from friends only, go to My MedHelp, then Account Settings, then Privacy.  There you can change your settings to whichever you feel most comfortable with - everyone, only friends or no one.

If you have specific concerns about something, I'd be happy to help in PM.  Please understand that the badges and Top Answerers are part of a bigger picture to help improve MedHelp.  It may not all be clear at the moment, but we hope it will be soon, as we continue to work to make MH a more enjoyable place.  Just bear with it and give it some time.

We know that you all give a lot of time to MH, and we really appreciate it.  We know change can be difficult, and not everyone will be pleased, but we actually have some people who like the new system (and some of those don't have a lot of stars), and some who don't care either way.  It's not all negative, and we are taking in all of the feedback, good and bad.

Thanks again,
Emily

Where are all you unhappy campers?  Helloooo!  Is everyone now happy with the new MH?  April2 put a new posting on New MH Suggestions to continue this thread.  Over there she put a link back to here so basically people could air their frustrations on either forum.  Mr. Green and others, do your friends have any thoughts on this?  I think if the word was spread that there are places where a person  can post their feelings on this issue.....maybe they would come forward.

I completely agree April....the best place to continue this discussion is on the MH suggestions forum.  That way everyone can post their constructive feedback so MH will have a better idea of how their members are reacting to the new changes MH is implementing.

I agree, Linda, maybe we should post the link of this thread over in the Suggestions forum but I would think MH sees this as well? What do you think?
The pm's kind of bother me because people can abuse that thinking no one will see. I really don't like a lot of these changes.

April, I couldn't agree with you more.   Some of the questions that come my way do appear fake or  made up by MH.  Some of them are downright crude or vulgar. I'm also getting a lot of anxiety questions which I'd like to know the answers to myself. :)  Why can't there be room for various posters, not just a few of the best? This new "format" is turning me off of MH.  This discussion should be posted in the MH suggestions forum and more people need to be alerted to where they can go and voice their feelings, ie. viewpoints on all these changes that are occuring before our very eyes.

This is what's bothering me lately. I'm now getting pm's from people asking me a question instead of them posting it on the forums because they say they saw I was the "top answerer". The first question I got awhile back looked fake, like they were looking for shock value, the second one was pretty close to that. I think when people send pm's they can put more in there than they'd dare post on a forum. I do answer as best as I can but this bothers me because it almost makes me feel forced to answer questions now when in the past I could pick and choose the questions I felt most comfortable with, the ones I felt I could help more with perhaps because I have experience, etc.
I feel in a way this new format is forcing us or guilting us into answering questions and I don't like that. It makes me feel like I'm being graded whereas I wouldn't have thought abouut all that before.
Also, the "best answer" feature bothers me because what if there's only two answers and they go ahead and pick out of the two? Then suppose a few more people come along and answer and I notice they may have more helpful information but I'm not even sure the poster notices or even comes back to check because they already picked a "best answer", plus this may make people feel like "Oh well, there was already a best answer I guess my answer wouldn't matter much or isn't as important." Do you all see what I'm saying?
All of this is really bothering me. I wish we could just go back to the old way of things.

Well, I think things around here are getting more ridiculous by the day.  I think MH has some new employees with too much time on their hands.  Stars belong on our flag...and in the Universe...not on our MH forums.   Please!  Would someone at MH just stop and think for a moment!  Everyone on here has good intentions of helping others....is the little gold star supposed to be a "reward" for posting?  Is there ANY one on here who genuinely gets off on collecting little gold stars ?  No, I didn't think so.  Then the stars, I guess, are used to attract new members....maybe to the most "starred" posters.  And who is it that is monitoring these highly esteemed posters and their highly expertised answers?  In other words, is it the answer or the number of posts that warrants the little gold stars? How "good" is the best? The whole point is everyone contrubutes something and its really about who connects and identifies with whose situation and solution. I say nix the stars.

Dont concern your self from the lack of interest in you putting up a pic of a terrorist/murderer I assume many are not interested but Peekawho puts a baby pic up as a joke and gets a ton of interest ... ... keep your pic up sounds like most dont care a jot ..........

May I respectfully ask why you have a pic of Guavara on your profile, I actually find it offensive as he was a cataloged murderer of many innocent people ,and not worthy of being on anyones profile on MH or anywhere ..

I just want to add, that personally I like the I report on my post, it gives me the opportunity to have it removed myself if I mis speak or say something out of emotion that I regret after seeing what I put down. lol Saves my butt is how I see it.

I agree that it is a way of keeping people involved and best answer is probably the one the poster felt was most helpful to his/her own situation, it does not make any of the others less helpful as others with a similar problem will still get what they need out of someones elses answer. Also you have people that have posted alot on those forums and others who may stop by occasionally, so I would not put too much into stars and badges. I dont think it will change how people answer one way or the other. We all are coming from our own opinions and experiences anyway and as we all know the disclaimer states it is not experts, just people giving opinions.

When I said I don't want to generalize I was referring to the fact it is true that a 1 star rated person can give a better answer than a 5 stars rated person but I don't think it's the point of this whole new concept as the point is to get members more involved.

Look,

the reasons why they added a rating system is to get the members to be more involved as they can perceive their posts on MH as some kind of achievements and personal's satisfaction and for convenience. On the other hand it is useful to other members to see who is more qualified in what domain and what not.

I do think the ratting system will get some members more involved and I do think it is more easy to answer questions with the new ''Questions for You'' tab. It makes it easier for new members to judge with a simple click who is likely to give you the best answer (don't want to generalize here) rather than go have a look and read all concerned person's earlier posts.

That being said I say it is major improvements for MH and it will just make this site a better and handy place to be.
