Tanning Tax

Tanning Tax

What do you guys think about this one?
There is now a 10% tax on indoor tanning...

I had always been a tanner..But I had stopped over the last 5 years..
My neurologists told me I am vitamin D deficient and told me that I must take a suppliment.Well I cannot tolerate the suppliment. So she told me  that I start tanning agin...So I am sort of prescribed to tan....lol
I live in the midwest and in the winter it is impossible to get natural sunlight...So I have to accept the tax and tan anyway....

Just another way to suck some more money out of people...that's what it is in a nutshell.  Did you hear that they are thinking of removing all table salt from restaurants?

all (i think) fast food restaurants are required to list their calorie, fat content on the wrappers and what not for their food as well.

Could this be like massage in which a physician can write a perscription and then you are exempt from the tax at the tanning salon?

Taxes taxes everywhere taxes . . . yeesh.

As one of those horrible smoker people I can only be elated that they're not picking on us right now! (here's my obligatory I am trying to quit statement)

Oh! Good grief! I hope you aren't still using the tanning salon! Here in Australia we have just had a HUGE clamp down on them. They are often unregulated, allow people to use them too long....the result? People are dying of skin cancers here. We had a very public case where a 20 year old died because she tanned too often. She was of Asian descent so had a darker skin than most Aussies. The fact is she died! She made a big issue of it. Since her death, the government has really come down hard on the use of tanning salons.
I am very fair. In my late teens I went to the tanning salons, and was given 20 minute doses. (I actually burn in 2 minutes) I only had a few treatments. If there had been a tax on the tanning salon I probably would have walked away. At that time I could barely afford the few treatments I had! Many years later.....I had a skin cancer on my leg removed. Stage 1 of 10.
Honestly, it isn't worth it. Forget the TAX issue...Please read up about the dangers!!!!!
I take Vit D and I hate it, but would rather that than a cancer...seriously!

Indoor tanning is not an advisable source of vitamin D. Both the sun and tanning beds emit two types of ultraviolet light rays, UVA and UVB. The skin absorbs both types, but in different ways. UVA rays have longer wavelengths that penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, whereas UVB rays’ wavelengths are short and only reach the surface layers of skin. Both types of rays contribute to the health risks associated with excessive sun exposure, such as the risk of developing skin cancers. However, UVB rays also trigger the synthesis of the vitamin D precursor in the skin, and thus are solely responsible for the healthy benefits of sunshine. For most people, exposing one’s arms and face to sunshine for about 20 minutes per day provides the skin with enough UVB rays to eliminate vitamin D deficiencies, without causing long-term damage to the skin.

the indoor tanning is not a good idea.....its really not healthy

In my case I have to get Vitamin D. I cannot take the suppliments because I am lactose intolerant and they are dairy based. I would not get enough from food sources..So eventhough it is not healthy  for me the benefits outway the risks as far as my neurologist is concerned....
Really dont have the option of 20 mins of natural sun during winter in the midwest...

Hey Renee!
When I moved over here, Holland, I was coming from a very sunny country. My dr gave me a cure of vit. D together with a diet. I have a real problem digesting vit. in general so she Rx'ed me a shots cure. I had thought about the tanning salon but she told me that the risk of cancer was way too high....

Cod liver oil is one of the highest percentages of Vit D3 and it isn't from a cow! Try that!

I am with aheart, as a smoker I am happy for the redistribution of wealth on the tanning bed. It causes cancer too afterall.

red, codliver oil is great source of Vit D, but just sitting outside on a sunny day for 15 minutes does wonders, especially with those who fight depression. IMO

I tried to take oral omega 3 pills(prescribed by Rheumy) and I could not tolerate those either...Some folks cannot tolerate fish oil and I'm one of them...
I would love to be able to get it from sitting outside. But agin I live in the midwest there is no sun in the winter and it is too cold .

I do not smoke, drink, eat fast food...It is not my fault that I am vitamin d deficient or that I cannot take the suppliments....I will pay the tax because I have no choice.

Also there is always UV rays even in winter and overcast days its a whole lot stronger,so you dont actually need the sunshine. We here in Aussie land are well informed as we live in a country where skin cancer is very high..

My neuro says that most folks become Vit D defecient here in the winter..
It gets below zero at times and I really dont want to sit outside with exposed skin...
In Aussie land you guys dont get the type of winters that we do here..My good friend lives in Melbourne....At this point in my neurological chaos skin cancer is the least of my concerns....LOL

Yes Teko, I have depression but am so fair skinned I burn in 2 minutes, and my Vit D levels were excessively low. Taking the Vit D has helped in 2 ways, lifted my depression and increased my calcium levels too!
In Melbourne our UV levels drop just as much as a Northern USA one does. It is the fact the earth tilts away from the sun creating shorter UV wave lengths. Our days are much shorter in winter too, gets dark at around 4.15pm and light at around 7am. Southern part of Australia has the lowest Vit D levels in people. Since the girl who died from a melanoma from the tanning beds, we now have very hefty fines for those who operate one without knowledge of the dangers. Whilst a short amount of exposure is fine, continual use is not recommended. Even once a week at 20 minutes for 6 weeks is going to cause huge problems down the track.
I urge you to take caution when you use the tanning bed. Limit the length of time you are on it. Maximum should be 10 minutes only each session, with several days between each session.
I understand your need to 'feel good' so do be careful!

Vitamin D has helped my moods tremedously...I am the other end of the spectrum I have anxiety and mild ocd...It's seemed to decrease the severity of my migraines too....

I look at it this way I dont smoke, drink or eat meat...So if tanning is my only vice thats not too bad...LOL ...
