Yeah, Ive tried wild turkey...not good!! Maybe it wasnt prepared correctly...
Happy Thanksgiving to all!!
In Wisconsin the DNR decided to repopulate the state with Turkeys. OMG, they are a nuisance. They do fly, SHORT distances. We have flocks of 15-40 birds in our county. It is not unusual to see them nested down for the night in our tress, branches hanging under their weight and waiting for the dawn when they once again scavenge the countryside searching for bits of corn or food to sustain them through our long cold winters.
It is also not unusual to have a turkey fly into your windshield as you tour the country roads. And many a turkey has meant their end on the windshield of a good old boys truck. They cause multiple dollars worth of damage to Wisconsinite's vehicles. In Wisconsin wild turkeys are not very good to eat. They are often tough and dry. Unfortunately they are not pre-basted by Butterball.
Domesticated turkeys are dumber than dog dirt. Wild turkeys are pretty wily. My brother is a bow hunter in Missouri and it takes more skill than you can imagine to bag one. The wild turkeys are absolutely gorgeous too - all kinds of colors mixed in to their various feathers that you don't see until they fly or the males spread their tails and parade around.
My MIL lives in Wimberley, TX in a senior community with a large commons in the middle of the property. A few years ago, a small turkey flock started going through there every day, so some residents put out seed for them. Everyone thought having a wild turkey flock around was pretty cool until it multiplied to over 50 birds. The guano is unimaginable and the claw damage to car paint is pretty impressive as well. Parks and Wildlife either can't or won't relocate them, and hunting is verboten in their area so the birds are now a permanent (and unwanted) fixture. LOL!
Kinda makes you wonder how smart turkeys are, doesn't it?
This is great....make me feel depressed and sorry for the poor turkeys right before Thanksgiving!! LOL
Maybe I'll eat chicken cuz I think they will at least TRY to get away!
It almost appears that they want to be killed by hunters. They just seem to stand there, waiting.
When we are actually living back home, they don't come around, because of the dogs. Nor do the bears come around as much.
But when I go back by myself, there's all sorts of wildlife around.
The turkeys of western Connecticut and upstate New York do the same thing.
We have wild turkeys back home in NC that roam all around. I never see them fly, although I suppose they can?
Mostly, they stand in the driveway, aimlessly milling around.
(well, okay 4 courses...but whose counting?)
Swampy is going to be alone this year, so he will make himself a simple fish dinner, and a dessert (which will be sour cream banana bread, see journal).
The three courses will be something like:
1. baked fish (coat with cornmeal / oregano / cayenne pepper / salt)
2. green veggie (okra if he can find it)
3. macaroni and cheese (or cornbread depending)
4. glutinous rice + lentils
I know...I was about to reply POPCORN??? What the $%#@ Then I read the rest and laughed.
Oh that one! The one with the popcorn? That was funny! They had me going there too. I was all ready to start copying down a recipe until I read till the end! Lol.
Check out the turkey recipe on this forum!! Turkey is good for you...so is pumpkin.
What turkey recipe?
And hey, turkey is good for you, right? So is pumpkin!
I do like them!! I do love that turkey recipe!!
I like Butterball (turkey that is!) I'm getting me a big 'ol Butterball turkey this weekend. Yum!
Sorry, Swampy!
Hahah Thats funny...I have seen wild turkeys roosting in trees. Although their not Butterballs or overloaded with salt injections...maybe thats my problem. Im a butterball
Can turkeys fly? I would think they'd be too fat to get off the ground! Maybe that's just our domesticated turkeys, though. The ones they purposely fatten up like a little butterball.
Hmmm Maybe I will make everything but the turkey!
Swampy doesn't eat turkey. Poor turkey. It wanted to fly and play.
Swampy usually tries to make himself something special, depending on the year.
