does anyone know if this is true or not/any police out there

YOU MUST KNOW *77

I knew about the red light on cars,
but not the *77.

It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon,
and Lauren was driving to visit a friend.
An UNMARKED police car pulled
up behind her and put his lights on.
Lauren's parents have always
told her never to pull over for
an unmarked car on the side of the road,
but rather to wait until they get to
a gas station, etc.Lauren had actually listened to her
parents advice, and promptly called
*77 on her cell phone to tell the
police dispatcher tha t she would
not pull over right away.
She proceeded to tell the dispatcher
that there was an unmarked police car
with a flashing red light on
his rooftop behind her.
The dispatcher checked to see if
there were police cars where she
was and there weren't,
and he told her to keep driving,
remain calm and that he had back up
already on the way.Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded
her and the unmarked car behind her.
One policeman went to her side
and the others surrounded
the car behind.
They pulled the guy from the car
and tackled him to the ground.
The man was a convicted rapist
and wanted for other crimes.I never knew about the *77
Cell Phone Feature,
but especially for a woman
alone in a car,
you should not pull over
for an unmarked car.
Apparently police have to respect
your right to keep going to a safe
& quiet place.
You obviously need to make some
signals that you acknowledge them
(i.e. put on your hazard lights)
or call *77 like Lauren did.Too bad the cell phone companies
don't generally give you this little bit
of wonderful information.*Speaking to a service representative
at ** Bell ** Mobility confirmed that
*77 was a direct link to state trooper info.
So, now it's your turn to let
your friends know about *77.Send this to every woman (and person)
you know; it may save a life.
This applies to ALL 50 states.

I have called "911" from my cellphone to report an accident a couple of times, and neither time has it worked....in our area...you HAVE to use *677.  The most stupidest thing ever.  Not everyone can remember this...but we all remember 911???  My dh tried to call 911 once, and it didn't work, so he called me, and asked me to report an accident he witnessed, I told him to call *677, and it worked!!!    He said another person at the accident scene tried 911  as well, and it wasn't working for them...

They stop people in umarked cars here,I got pulled up when i was teenager, and unfortunately there were no mobile phones back then.Lucky for me i wasnt alone, but dread the thought if i had been.Anyway it was weird so i went to the nearest police station to complain about the plain clothes officers with their guns.they asked for a description of the two men and and asked if we remembered the number plates.
WE had written that and the type of car, dont know if anything came of it,but it was scary. So glad that we now have mobile phones and we call 000 like your 911 and its free!

I read in my local paper that they do NOT stop in unmarked cars anymore. Some woman locally here got robbed because she stopped. Its a scary thought.

How do you really know...lets say in the dark-you dont know alls you see are the flashing lights?!!??
I know if it happens to me I would FIRST call 911 then would call *77

Why would someone email a fake like that-thats horrible if its not true!!!

sad part is swampy that there have been especially young ladies who get attacked when they have stopped for unmarkes cars.. i think if i were a young lady in a desolete area i might not stop fro an unmarkes car

Once the officer turns on his lights you put him in a difficult position in not stopping. You have the strong potential of turning what might be a minor situation into a major one.

Calling 911 might help, but how are the authorities to know you aren't busily destroying evidence? Depending on the area, it might work...depending on the reason for the stop.

Some jurisdictions have limitations on stopping people with an unmarked car, but many do not.

I have never heard of this.   I would call 911 in that situation.   It's a good thing to bring to everyones attention.  Not all would realize it could be a dangerous situation and not really a police officer.

Snopes . com has this down as probably not true.

There are several variations of this story out there, and they are all basically the same.  Sometimes the number is different from *77.

Different states use different codes to reach the highway patrol.  Some do not use any special codes at all.  The best advice given is to always dial 911 if you are unsure about being stopped in a bad or deserted area.  Call and tell the dispatcher where you are, and that you intend to stop in a safer area.  Put your lights and/or flashers on, and slow down until you get to a place you feel you can stop at.

911 (in the US) is your best option for getting help when needed.  Do not rely on one special code such as *77.  It may not work in your area, and you may waste precious time trying to use it.
