dog lovers..what do you think????

someone in my neighborhood has this Doxin (hot dog) who just roams the neighborhood AT ALL TIMES!!!.... morning, afternoon, or night it doesnt matter.... he doesnt move for cars that are coming... and sooner or later someone is going to run it over....

so last night i went to the store, i saw the dog as i was leaving, walking the streets as normal... i was at the store for a few mins and came back.... as i pulled into the neighborhood i didnt see the dog.... so i kept going at about 10 mph, had my dog in my passager seat.....all of a sudden the last min that little MTF came running out to the front of my car!!... i had to slam on my breaks, and my dog hit my windsheild (even tho i wasnt going fast i had to stop VERY fast)...

the owner was outside and WATCHED the whole freakin thing!!!......i put my window down and screamed "is this your dog??"... this jerk just ignored me ,laughed, and walked away......HELLLLLLO I ALMOST JUST KILLED YOUR DOG AND YOU LAUGH???...i screamed again and the owners neighbor was outside, i asked the neighbor was it his dog and he said no and pointed to the jerk who just laughed at me.....

i went home and called the poilce, after 2 hours they finally showed up, and stayed for about 30 seconds and said have a good night......WTF??...glad my tax dollars pay their bills......

what am i supposed to do here?...call animal control?....call everyday until someone does something?? i DO NOT want to be the one to runt his dog over, cause i will never forgive myself.....

this drives me nuts! That poor dog, well i also hope he's in a good home now that you havent seen him. I have a doxie and he is the most loyal lovable creature, i couldnt imagine letting him roam the streets night and day, people that dont have the time and patients dont belong having a dog. point blank!

wow, things are so different in england, if this happened here the RSPCA would of taken that dog a long time ago, under neglect (on the owners part) and being a public health hazard (from keep nearly being knocked over). Its lucky you were only going 10 mph, can you imagine if you were going any faster, both u and ur dog would of gone through the windshield....... someone was looking out for you i think.

I live in the country and had a neighbor that lived about ½ mile away that had a dog that came to my house and peed on my back door. I would periodically catch it and put it on a leash and take it back to him and ask nicely if he would please keep his dog at home, like I did mine. I do understand that from time to time a dog will get loose and that’s no biggie, but he just let his out to run. The last time I took it back he said that it was my fault because my dogs were females and in heat,  they were spayed so noooo that wasn’t why. He told me we lived in the country and his dogs could run loose if he wanted them too, I reminded him that country rules are I could shoot his dog on my property if I wanted too. BTW I would not do that I would catch them and take them to the pound first. He told me to get off his property and called the Sheriff. I saw the Sheriff go down his drive and leave, the Sheriff didn’t come see me and his dog never came back. The end result was that one of the other neighbors did shoot his dog. I felt bad for the dog, but this guy was a jerk and should have received some type of fine or something.

I do let mine ride in the car too and don’t think I am being irresponsible for that. I have a truck and letting them ride in the back where they could jump or be thrown out and get hurt would be. I have thought about getting a harness so I could seatbelt them in lol.

turkee,
it's not irresponsible having your dog ride in the front seat of your car... a little dangerous, perhaps, as the dog may decide to jump on your lap while you're driving.
But, it's a real stretch to define that as irresponsible conduct.
As for the loose dog... if the other neighbors (perhaps, 1 or 2 others) voiced the same complaint, that would definitely get things moving from a law enforcement perspective. There's power in numbers.

do they give you the option to report "anonymously"? or could they just say "they've received multiple reports of a dog on the loose." something to make it so that you aren't being pointed out directly? i know spca around here does the anonymous thing so that they don't cause issues between neighbors.

the dog looks like he is fed... with a collar on...

specialmom yea they are younger kid (like 21-25) and have the rebel flags everywhere and always causing kaos in the neighborhood with their 4 wheelers. so no anything that has to do with them is not going to be peaceful at all....

they dont care, i called and reported them to animal control they said they are going to go , if the dog is outside they can issue a ticket. i guess if i keep callin and reporting it then they will eventually get the picture. i just hate doing it where i sleep cause if they really wanted to cause problems they know where i live......

turkee i'd say call the spca or whoever your local humane society is and report them. if they're that irresponsible with letting their little pup run around outside without a leash they're most likely not taking care of him/her inside. (aka food, clean water...) they could take the dog off of them and put him/her up for adoption.

Turkee, the sad thing is that you never know who you are dealing with.  If they could care less when the police talk to them and they know at least one neighbor is clearly upset . . . and yet they still don't leash their dog,  they probably aren't interested in a peaceful resolution. . .

And what if the are nuts-----  you probably don't want to mess with that.  Poor dog!!!  But I guess you'll be obeying the speed limit down your street forever . . .. lol

jeez i didnt think i was irresponsible for having my dog in the front seat but i guess i was.... dont you put your teenager in the front seat?

yea i was just upset and shaking up when i yelled "is this your dog??".....all the neighbors have said it....

i dont know if im going to act on it anymore. the dog was outside again last night even after the police went to their house and said they need to keep the dog on a leash or on their property.

I also hate irresponsible pet owners and the worst are those that think killing others pets is okay.

we just got a 6 month old pup yesterday. love her too pieces. my neighbor (the cranky old bat) has an older dog. a shepherd mix. MANY MANY MANY times we've seen what this nuisance of a dog can do. she tears up our garbage on garbage night, knocks over our cans, chases the neighbors cat out of HER yard. (yes the dog goes to the other neighbors yard and disturbs her pets.) has chased MY cat (we have a pup and a cat) WHILE I'M OUTSIDE WITH HER!!! took me 2 1/2 hours to find my dear kitty.

we called the spca...they gave the woman a fine and citation letting her know if the dog continues what she is doing she will be removed and placed for adoption to a responsible owner. we haven't seen the dog off a lease since. : o) we do get dirty looks though but...oh well. we don't really care.

Usually if you call the humane society, they will pick the dog up if caught running loose. Then the owner has to pay a fine to get it back. If the owner does not claim the dog, they will keep it for a period of time, then put it up for adoption. At least that is what they do here where I live.

Oh boy, think we've gotten off track here . . . does the dog's owner live on your street?  If so, what about walking down and politely telling him that you worry about the welfare of his dog.  That you would hate to see anything happen to him and was wondering if one of those posts you stick in the ground with a chain attached to it and then the dog attached to that wouldn't be a better option . . .  (Do you have anyone that could walk with you if this makes you nervous?)  His response of laughing at you when you yelled is not encouraging but usually people are not complete jerks if approached in a polite "lets solve this problem so I don't kill your dog" kind of way.

Throw in that lots of neighbors are nervous about the little dog running around so when animal control nabs him, he won't just think it is you . . .   I am sure there really are other neighbors that would like the dog treated a little better and safe.  good luck

Then, most of the domestic cats would be dead... not to mention the hysteria that would arise from animal rights activists.

I too hate irresponsible pet owners.  Some of the worst are those that complain about everybody else's pets but think they are fine.  ...Most of those will alow their pet to ride with them in the front seat where even as slow as 10mph their pet can/does hit the windshield.

What's needed in regards to your loose dog situation is a law that says if the animal is found loose on public or your own private land that you have the right to kill it.  Just my opinion that anyone who wants a pet would then do everything they can do to keep it on their own property.

I dont think they will put him down if he is well fed although stupid .the people probably are fond of him in their weird way , so maybe they will keep him in now ..more and use the leash ..you did a good thing,

yea it seems to be pretty friendly, but when i was 8 i got attacked by a stray dog pretty bad and had all plastic surgery done to my face..so me picking up a stray dog is kinda out of the question....lol.... yes i yell at the dog to "go home!" and he actually listens and hurry's home..... i do nt want the dog to be put down, i just want these people to keep him on a leash so i or anyone else run him over!....

The owner of that Dachsund is in violation of the leash law. But, unless animal control actually finds the dog running loose; or, there's been a bite report; or, if there are signs of abuse or gross neglect, there's not much they can do... except issue a warning to the owner. I used to work for Animal Control, here in San Diego County... and we were inundated with loose dog complaints on a daily basis. But, I'll let you in on something... if that dog is tame, and if it'll let you pick it up, there's really nothing to stop you from turning that dog over to the animal shelter when you find it running loose again. If it had a license tag on it, the owner would be tracked down and fined... assuming that they'd want the dog back. In the late 70s, it was $100 per violation. Today, it's probably closer to $250 per violation. But, if it didn't have a license tag, it would be considered to be a "stray" and could be put up for adoption. The downside of turning in the dog is that if no one claims it (usually within 3-4 days) ... it'll probably be put down. Oh, I just hate irresponsible pet owners!

I think animal control is the best way for the dog as he will get knocked over, perhaps if you can find out where it lives you can ask them to go and speak to the owner, if he is wondering they will find out information about him, whethwer he should even have a dog ..Good luck I used to have a dachsey they are great little dogs shame I dont live in your area .......
