MEDULLARY SPONGE KIDNEY DISEASE (MSK) COMMUNITY
Huh?

Huh?

Ok, so I went to see my specialist last week. In December he said my kidney function was getting worse and I would be on dialysis in 10 years if they kept deterioating etc. So this time he looked at my blood/urine results and said my kidneys were fine, they are stable and see you in 6 months. He also told me to take cranberry supplements to try and avoid further infections and that was it! I said what about them getting worse? He just said no, they're fine and he's happy with everything! Since then I have seen my GP and I asked him about it and he said it was possible that their function may have been down the day I had my tests and their function can go back to their "normal" levels. So, I'm a little confused but hopefully they won't trouble me until my next visit!

I would encourage you to get a copy of your lab results and find out what they are talking about.  Do you have MSK?  I assume so if your on this forum but don't want to assume!

I had a very similar issue, my creatine levels increased every blood test, along with my BUN.  My GFR rating was down to 63.4,, My URO was unconcerned but my GP seemed to be.  How ever in Aug I had a procedure done to decrease the number of stones in my kidneys etc. At first my creatine did still go up, but now since healing all my kidney functin has improved significantly..., my GFR rating is 82 or something like that now.

Is it possible that you had a stone in the uretrer or a UTI at the time of the last test etc.?

Glad it is much better now!

Hi -- was thinking the same thing .. a stone maybe?  Also, do you have history of stones?  If so and they are calcium oxalate you may want to double and triple ck on the use of cranberry juice daily which may actually promote growth of kidney stones .. sometimes low-dose antibiotic therapy is preferred.

My nephro was concerned in Dec. because my GFR was down to 53 but it went back up to 59 the next blood test. I was 3 or 4 days post op kidney surgery when I got the 53. It is good to know our kidneys are resilient!
They have a kidney function tracker here that will allow you to see your kidney function over time. If you get the numbers from your doc for your last few tests, you can enter them in on the dates of the tests and keep track yourself. That is what I did.

Thanks for your advice. I do have MSK, I was diagnosed in 1998 but haven't had many problems, just stones and kidney infections. I never thought to keep track of my kidney function so next time I see my nephrologist I will get the facts. I take it that the GFR is the function indicator? I have stones in each kidney but they haven't troubled me for about 6 years so I'm happy as long as they are! I will check out the pros and cons of cranberry supplements before I decide as well.
