Kidney Function

Hello everyone I'm David 24, was diagnosed at 22 after a stone 1cm ruptured and sent fragments into the left kidney causing a lot of damage. The stone after exploding was 6mm and required surgery (ureteroscopy) but this is how I was diagnosed never had a problem before then. Since then a lot has changed but this initial blast did damage to my kidney and I've slowly been losing kidney function. I have a friend who also has MSK and he had similar problems. It's actually gotten to the point he's probably going to lose the kidney but he was diagnosed at 20 and is 39 now. I'm a nursing major so I understand a good amount about anatomy and physiology my question is how many others have experienced similar problems? I know infection is the main way the kidneys are damaged in this disorder but have you experienced loss of function without infection? I was wondering how normal this is or if its just more severe cases. Now I've read article after article gone through many medical books (you'd be surprised how often its left out) and this disorder is vaguely understood at best but I would just like to know if others have experienced this or going through it currently.

David, welcome to the group. I am new myself and have found out all sorts of valuable information and met some wonderful people since joining. So far, my kidney function has been fine so I can't really comment on that. On my first visit to my new nephrologist, he mentioned that I was at high risk for kidney failure at least 6 times so I'm assuming it will come at some point. You may want to contact MSKShelly on here. She has been researching this disease for a long time and has a ton of information on it. She may be able to shed some light on it for you. Again, welcome and good luck!

You will find so much info here for you..., you are not alone and after 100's of patients from around the world the contact me, with the same problems and symptoms.  I personally watched my kidney function eek closer and closer to abnormal... then my GFR rating was very low. After having Dr. Wolf's procedure it improved 20 pts. Still considered a little low, but my kidney function rating has returned to normal.  There are many article out there.. to understand that you can have infection even if it doesn't show on standard tests. The infections set up biofilms within the calcifications and only slough off in low numbers so do not always show on standard test.

I cannot begin to imagine the pain of that 1.0 cm stone!  I had a 1.0 mm hang on for a week that was excrutiating .. when it passed it had a fish-like hook on it.

WELCOME to our Group!
