Potassium Citrate

by Totie, Dec 31, 2008 09:54AM
Question for anyone taking this. I was diagnosed with IC back in Oct. The last visit I had with my urologist Dec. 12, she put me on Potassium Citrate Tab 1080mg. I have been taking this going on 3 weeks now. She mentioned something about my PH level (urine to acididy) I think. It has helped in lowering the pain from the IC, (burning).

Anyway, my question is does anyone who has taken or is taking this get kidney pain? Is the dosage to high?

I don't have any problems with my kidneys as far as I know. I had kidney stones and a UTI about 12/13 yrs ago, but that was it. I did have toxeima 15 yrs ago. I have had my kidneys tested (ct scan, ultra sounds), all okay.

Just wondering why the kidney pain since I started taking this.

Thanks for any replies i get....

Totie,
Dr. Moldwin in his book the IC Survival Guide does list the UROCIT-K as a treatment for acidic urine in IC too.  Though it is designed to help prevent kidney stones, it is also used to make urine more alkaline.  The mg your on is standard.  I concerned me since with IC pain there is the discussion of the use of Potassium and increasing symptoms?
Bottom line like everything with IC is that see if it works for you!

You can get pH strips pretty cheaply usually through a healthfood store.  It might helped to log your symptoms along with the pH of your urine when your having the burning and time you took the UROCIT-K.  If it is helping stay on it and don't change the dose.  If you have side effects or find that you might need one halfway through the day etc, to help improve you symptoms, that show your log to your doctor and ask him about increasing the dose.

At first I thought it helped my burning but later made it worse however in my case I believe that is because of the chronic infection not my IC.

Since you have IC have you visited our website MOARK IC?
