A question for Dr. Seibel or anyother expert in this field re: Leichen Sclerosis

by 777me, Jul 06, 2009 09:59PM
Dear Dr. Seibel:

I would like to know if you would be able to tell me if there is something better out there for Lichen Sclerosis treatment .  The answers appear that this disease will continue to progressively get worse with the treatment of Clobetersol  or any other medication in the same category.  There are also side effects from this particular type of drug thinning of the skin of this area.  Also since I do not have itching and burning just the scarring and white areas how will I know when I need to apply. Also I am very dry in that area.  Is this so uncommon now or is it being seen more since there now are more women that are not receiving HRT.  Would initiating HRT help to stop the progression of this disease? I like everyone else do not want this disease to cont. to progress the scarring is already bad enough and I am worried about the future increase scarring,  urinary problems and possible painful intercourse.

I also have hypothyroidism my current TSH is 0.889
I have had my hormones checked and the results are that they are all postmenopausal and my testosterone is within normal limits.

By Bx I was told I have the early stages of this.  I do not have any of the common symptoms (itching pain).  My symptom is scarring of my clitarous and also my labia minora adhered to my majora.  Like everyone else I have read the treatment and my physician has put me on Clobetersol for 2 weeks BID and then as needed.  Prior to treatment I was able to gently separate the minora from the majora, The clit still remains scarred.  My question is this I am 52 and do not want to see this advance and the answers I am receiving does not sound as if this medication is going to stop the progression of this desease.  Have you seen an increase in this uncommon disease since the decrease of hormone replacement therapy due to the Women's Initative Study.  Do you think hormone replacement therapy would help stop the progression of this disease?  Are there any studies out there. In the forum there was the use of progesterone and estrogen . If HRT would be beneficial would oral be just as affective as any cream.  Another question would a combination of the Clobetersol and testosterone (off set the thinning of the area from use of Clobetersol) be more beneficial than Clobetersol alone. Over use of Clobetersol can also lead to increased infection and other diseases.     I still have my uterus.

My friend lives in northern Mississippi and has no insurance.  Are there any treatment centers or research centers that could help her with Lichen Sclorosis keeping in mind she has "no insurance".
