A. Periods often are delayed after a child is born, especially if people are breast feeding. It’s nature’s way of helping women delay getting pregnant too soon afterward.  Over the next two months, most women will have their cycles start up again.  However, after a baby is born, women produce an egg (ovulate) before they have their first period so it important to use contraception if you don’t want to get pregnant right away. If you don’t get a period in the next two months, ask the health care provider who delivered your baby about the situation. They might want to check a blood hormone test or two to understand why your period is delayed.
