Hi Kelly,
I am 43 and have been struggling with a sudden onset of Anxiety also. It started about 6 months ago. At the time I started having heart palpitations and then about a month later had a full blown anxiety attack. I had a thorough exam by a cardiologist to rule out heart issues. All came back fine.
I instantly cut out caffeine and dramatically reduced my sugar intake, just as you have, and it has made a huge difference in my anxiety level. Although I do still struggle with it especially at certain times of the month. I am at a point now where I am able to function day to day, but it still holds me back. I have yet to find a Dr. that is willing to take the time to seriously discuss hormonal/perimenopausal issues. They just want to give me a "magic" pill and send me on my way.
It seems that the OBs love to hand out BCPs, which I absolutely do not want, and the GPs, antidepressants, which I am not 100% opposed to, but it's just not what I need.
I think more Docs need to be educated on the power of good nutrition as good medicine, and not on the science of pushing pills by the pharmaceutical companies.
I have reduced my sugar intake dramatically, cut out caffeine completely, pile on the fruits and veggies and take a good multivitamin supplement each day.
A book that I found to be helpful: "When Your Hormones Go Haywire" by Pamela Smith, R.D.
Hi,
Actually I've been told its just hormonal and not pre-men. I am 45 and have received a suggestion of the estroven (the basic one, no extras) that is sold in Walgreens stores as well as "Rescue Remedy" by Bach which are floral essences you can find on line or in health food stores. I am also changing my diet to MUCH less sugar and many more fruits and veggies. I can already feel a difference & have not even started the estroven or rescue remedy as of yet. Do you have anymore suggestions? Thank you for your time and consideration.
