Bleeding after menopause

by Lindyy, May 06, 2008 09:21AM
I am losing my mind here.  I am 57 and have been in menopause for about 4 years and am on hormones (Activella. which is perfect for me. ) So i think.

Some background....
From 12 when I first got my period to 33 I had perfect periods. No cramps. No excessive bleeding. Then one period my life changed. For the next 20 years I had life-altering cramps and hemorrage type bleeding.  Anaprox alleviated the cramps and I lived on it.  I had many D&C and was told I had fibroids and I should have an hysterectomy. I refused. I have only been pregnant once and that end with an abortion in 1973 when I was 23.
I was never able to get pregnant and was told I had scaring on tubes by a laparoscopy I was only on birth control  for 2 year in my early twenties and was not on anything for over 30 years.

When I started going through menopause I had all typical symptoms, night sweats, lack of sleep, decreased sex drive, hot flashes (every 8 mintues). Then I went on Activella which with one pill changed my life. I was great for about 7 months and then I started bleeding again. I had a huge fibroid partially removed (couldn't get it all) about 3months ago and have never stopped bleeding from that.  I know I should probably go off the  Activella and the bleeding will stop but I can't function without it. My GYN who I do trust, has tried to put me on Estrogen alone with a progesterone every three months but I hemmorage after just one pill. I tried the ring. Bleed uncontrollablly.  I really don't want to have a hysterectomy but if it's a choice between no hormone and surgery I might just pick surgery.

What are my options do you have any suggestions?

Lindyy,
I have many friends who have had a hysterectomy and wanted to throw a party afterwards!
They lived with painful fibroids for many years, and became so much happier after the hysterectomy. It's not an uncommon result when fibroids cannot be controlled. I would listen to your GYN, or consult another if that makes you feel better. But, is  sounds like you may be heading that direction.

I had a hysterectomy due to 3 fibroids the size of baseballs.  Because of the fibroids, my uterus swelled to 520 grams (normal uterus is around 80grams).  I also had hemorragic bleeding.  I have never, and will never, regret having had a hysterectomy.  Best thing I have ever done.  I've never felt better in my life, and I'm not even on hormones.  If I were you, I'd see my GYN again to discuss the options.
