Bleeding heavy for 14 days and still continuing

I have been bleeding heavily for 14 days and no sign that it is gong to stop. I am 49 and never had problems before this is the first time it happened. My periods are normally 3-5 days and are 23 to 27 day cycle.
is that normal? oh and i am also getting lots of lower abdomen cramps and feeling a bit weak so started taking some iron.
did anyone experience this?

Hi I am on my third pack of birth control pills and I am having very heavy flow with blood clots.  This scares me because I was given the birth control to help regulate my period, but not sure if it is helping.  I am animic and losing so much blood worries me.  This is affecting every aspect of my life.  My doctor tells me to wait another month or so because it is too early to say the birth control has failed me.  I am so worried what should I do?

Thank you so much for your responses. I went to my Dr and she told me to take iron and suggested either to wait for a few more days or start on progesteron tablets for 14 days and stop so that hopefully my cycle will re start as soon as i stop the tablets and will become normal again.
Anyway, it was just unbelievable when yesterday wednesday I suddently stopped bleeding, just like nothing happened and without taking anything.
Lets hope it won't happen again.
The Dr said that if it happens again then it is best to go on control pill for a little while and then see what happens.
Thank you for your support.

Yes, go to your Dr. I had very heavy cycles.. 21 days of heavy bleeding, a week off, then back on for 2-3 weeks. I was borderline anemic.
My dr said we can try birth control pills ( I am already on bioidentical hormones) or I could have endometrial uterine ablation. I chose the ablation.
I had it in  Dec. 09. For me, it was the best decision. Now I have very little or no discharge/ cycles, and the heavy cramps, fatigue, back pain are gone.
  Best wishes to you!

I think if it continues you should go see your Doc..it can caue you to be anaemic if it goes on to long.I cant speak for myself but a friend of mine had a period that lasted almost 3 months heavy bleeding non stop ..cant remember what they did but it stopped it..not sure if it was the pill they put her on  or something but she got really weak with all the bleeding..dont let it go to long
My last period (december)lasted the whole month but it wasnt heavy..just spotting but for about a year prior leading up to meno my periods where all over the place..I could go 8 weeks between periods or 2 days and anything in between.
