Breast Pain

by April2, Nov 13, 2008 02:42PM
I'll try one last time with this question. I tried to post this before but got no response. I hope someone out there can relate to me so I know I'm not the only one!

I was told this could be my hormones fluctuating due to perimenopause so I thought I'd come over here and see if anyone can relate.
I'm 43, non-smoker and healthy. The last few months I've noticed that around the time I normally would ovulate (I'm guessing) my breasts will really hurt, especially the nipples. I mean they will get so sensitive and painful that I can't stand anything touching them, even my clothes. I can't have the shower touch them either. It hurts so bad.
I know I'm not pregnant.
Like I said, it's mostly the nipples that are extremely painful and sometimes they itch but I'd be afraid to scratch because of the pain.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? And is there anything that can help?
Thanks!

Hi April.  I get breast pain, but it's around the side and underneath.  I am already through menopause, however.  Also, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, so that could be it.  But I have had this pain throughout my life, on and off.

What I do is use ice ( I know it sounds bad) and take some Advil.  I also get a red rash around my nipples and the doctor told me to put cortizone cream on it or neosporin.

I too used to have painful breasts. It is hormone related because I was to the point to where I was worried and concerned about how badly they would hurt. My doctor told me it's my hormones. I did have a total hysterectomy last February and guess what? I haven't had painful breasts since, so I believe it's due to your hormones.

Do you have your yearly mammograms every year? This is also important. Not saying this to scare you, but you should have them yearly as well.

Yes, thank you. I had a mammogram last Summer. I kind of figured it was due to hormones but I haven't gotten any other symptoms of early menopause. At least I don't think so. I've been a bit more anxious and I do get up throughout the night because I'm either hot or cold so I'm adjusting the heat or air conditioning all the time. I like my bedroom cool, almost cold. It drives my husband crazy, lol.

Perhaps this is just food for thought:

Sometimes, some women may tend to become a bit more sexually active during or around the time of ovulation.  This can be normal, of course.  If the woman's breast / nipples are being aroused during foreplay, etc. then the nipples can become extremely sensitive and very painful to the touch, esp. the following day/s until they heal.  Some women are more sensitive to this than others.

Also, wearing certain fabric material without a bra can cause this type of irritation regarding nipples.

It is not uncommon for the breast to become a little more tender and sore around ovualation (sometimes, up to two weeks before period is due) due to hormone fluctuations and changes.

Hope this helps.

Have a great day today.

Nope, that's not it. I kind of thought it might just be because I was in the middle of my cycle (or ovulating) but the thing is it's super sensitive anymore lately, much more than I ever remembered before. Something seems different. And I'm not pregnant!
This isn't just a little tenderness. They really hurt a lot the last few months. I was just wondering if it was a sign that I was entering perimenopause since I hadn't experienced this before. I've heard that can happen.
