Early Menopause due to Mirena IUD?

A couple of yeras ago, with my second Mirena in place, I experienced several strange symptoms - waking up in the night with tachycardia, anxiety, sweating and extremely high BP, etc. Several tests came back negative (kidney function, thyroid, etc.) The episodes vanished as suddenly as they appeared, but borderline-high hypertension persisted and I was started on perindopril erbumine 4mg once a day. In April 2009, my Mirena was taken out after 5 years in place. I loved Mirena, because my periods disappeared completely since I started using it in 1999 and I had no negative side-effects. In June 09, my period had still not returned, so my dr. did hormone levels. FSH: 90.3 IUL; Estradiol 144 pmol/L. I was post-menopausal. In retrospect, the few strange episodes might have had something to do with menopause. Isn't 48 a little young to be post-menopausal? Did the Mirena cause early menopause? Does early menopause put me at risk for any diseases? I feel great and I am very healthy except for the hypertension which is well controlled on perindopril. (My dad had HT, died of MI at 54, my mom is 75, HT since age 51) I'm not complaining, if this is menopause, I'm breezing through it. Hot flashes are rare (maybe once a week or less) and my libido is unaffected; in fact, better than ever. My husband is a happy man. I really don't need HRT, but will it protect me against any diseases? Thank you for your time.

Hello All,

At age 38 about 2 years ago I had Mirena inserted and actually thought it was a wonder drug, as I experienced little side effects and the thought of no periods was wonderful, until recently.  My weight before Mirena was about 140, and today it is now 180, nothing I do will take the weight off, I am a healthy eater and try to stay active, people kept telling me it was because I was reaching 40 and a metabolism slows down tremendously during your 40's so that is what I thought as well.  After reading all of your comments and experiences I'm finally feeling a bit relieved it's not just me.  But that is not the only thing that has happened to me, I am constanly fatigued, grouchy and have been experiencing awful hot flashes and night sweats.  I went to the doctor to have my hormone leves checked because all of my symptoms and I am in menopause at age 40.  I have since had the Mirena removed and with my doctors care am exploring options to offset these menopausal symptoms.  Needless to say I am very upset and believe that Mirena is the culprit.  Could anyone offer any advice on helping with the hot flashes holistically??

Thanks for listening!!

Hi Jesse1188,

I've experienced the same symptoms as you after having my second Mirena fitted two years ago (I'm 49).  My life was hellish, heart pounding, waking up alot at nights, thinking strange thoughts, very high blood pressure, very bad anxiety, tinnitus the llist could go on.  I have now had the Mirena taken out.  I am in full menopause and am still having symptoms.  The anxiety has been very bad but since taking the Mirena out the anxiety has improved a little. I think the Mirena did cause my early menopause and high blood pressure (no one in my close family have high blood pressure) amongst other things.  My doctor insist the Mirena is not to blame but I beg to differ.
