Endometrial thickening

Hello,
I am 52 years old, and in 2009 had an endometrial biopsy due to thickening (9mm) which came back benign.  Nothing else was done, and now I have been having spotting, went in for my check-up, and had an US which showed my thickening to now be 16mm.  He has now scheduled me for a hysteroscopy, D & C, and biopsy.  I am of course concerned this is cancer; my question is, could there be other reasons for such a large amount of thickening?  He said he didn't see any polyps or fibroyds on the US.  I am concerned maybe we didn't do enough to treat the 9mm thickening back in 2009.  We just did the biopsy, and that was it.  Should that have been treated?  I'm wondering now if that turned into cancer because we werent aggressive enough.  I mostly am just having some spotting~~I had something like a period a few months back.  Not a lot of pain or anything~~maybe a little cramping.  Thanks so much!!

Thank you so much for the reply!  I had actually posted another question, so I don't know if you saw that, but I had been lurking around the internet last night (bad idea!) and it just seems like most people have a thickness of 9 or so, when they do have a problem.  It seems like my thickness, at 16mm, is quite extreme.  Can it still just be hyperplasia at 16, or is this more indicitive of cancer?  Also, should I feel somewhat reassured that in May of 2009, I had an endometrial biopsy that was benign, because even though it was 3 years ago, from what I've read, it takes cancer many years to form in the endometrium, and if it was benign then, maybe it has grown into hyperplasia by now, but that cancer would be a ways off?  I hope you can understand what I'm asking!  It's easy to sound so confused when you are scared about something.  Thanks so much!!!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
HI,
The endometrial thickening of 16mm does need evaluation. This could be because of endometrial hyperplasia or polyps or endometrial cancer. D&C and hysteroscopy will help make the diagnosis. Regarding the previous episode, probably nothing was done as the report was normal. If there is endometrial hyperplasia, this can progress to cancer and treatment with progesterone is helpful. Discuss with your Doctor.
Take care and good luck.
