Formication

My sister is 61 years of age and is experiencing crawling sensations. not of ants as is the typical symptom of formication, but of mice crawling under her body as she sleeps or sits. She says the sensation  also comes with sounds of mice chewing or scattering across the floor. have you heard of others with the same complaint? Her house is clean. There are no mice, no droppings. no signs of any rodents of any kind. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Your sister has several symptoms and it is difficult to know exactly what is causing them with the information you have provided and without an examination.  Formication is the belief that bugs are crawling on you. It comes from the word formica which means ‘ant’. It is usually a hallucination or a side effect from certain medications including some high blood pressure medicines. Ask about what meds she might be taking and discuss those with her doctor.  She certainly sounds like she has some type of sensory experience that needs investigation. Try talking with a neurologist who should be able to tell her if the creeping sensations  have a neurological cause.  She could be hearing animals in her attic or on the roof and believes them to be in her room. Also menopause could be associated with some of these symptoms.  I’m sure these symptoms are very concerning.  It might be helpful if you went with her to see her doctors to see if together they could outline a plan for you.
