Why do some women lose quite a lot of hair at menopause and others don't? If the hair loss is caused by lack of estrogen would it stop falling out and grow back if hrt is taken?

Thank you,
Lowena

There are many causes of hair loss in women and in particular around menopause. It is a rather common problem. Some causes include stress (loss of a loved one), increase in testosterone, low thyroid function, medications, skin conditions of the scalp, excessive chlorine, and many others. Talk with your doctor and have your hormone levels checked and consider seeing a dermatologist. Treatments take up to three months to begin noticing a difference.  Taking HRT usually does not cause hair to grow back. Eating a healthy diet, taking a multivitamin, avoiding harsh chemicals and excessive sunlight can be helpful.
