Is it dumb to get hysterectomy to end periods

Hi - I was so sick and so much pain this week - every month it's the same and I'm almost 50. My sister is 57 and she still gets her periods every month and they won't do a hysterectomy at her age cuz they keep saying she's bound to start menopause soon. I have fibroids and I'm sick of being horribly depressed when PMS'd then knocked flat on my back the second day of each period from flow/cramps/migraine. Am i nuts to think menopause can't be worse than this? Thoughts? Oh, i have lousy circulation and am always freezing cold so while i don't mean to be insensitive, the odd hot flash might be welcome. Sorry to those who suffer from them.

Thanks Ladies. Met with my gyno today and am going for the Novasure ablation - maybe as early as next week. I have a new job starting this week too and I can't see myself dealing with these crazy periods and being as effective as I should -- so I'm going for it. Will let you know how it goes...

Hi! So sorry to hear about your health issues. I had heavy, heavy, long cycles for months, cramping, felt like crud!!. However I did not have any fibroids.
I too just had the novasure procedure done one month ago! So far a great decision. It was easy, relatively painless except for few  brief hours postoperatively. I had VERY light cycle, almost nonexistent and feel SO much better. And I too have all my "parts" with me.
Research the pros and cons of this  procedure- then talk to your doctor to see if it would be a consideration for you. Good luck to you!

Hi there!

I don't have periods like that, but my sister and one of my closest friends did. I'm 47, my sister is 45 and my friend is 41. They both had a laprascopic surgery called "Novasure" for this very reason.

My sister had hers maybe a year ago and she is so glad that she did! My friend just had hers a few days ago, so I'm not sure what she thinks yet. My sister said she wishes she could have gotten it years ago. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but she still has all of her "parts". She still had her periods for the first couple of months, but they just faded away. As far as I know, she doesn't bleed at all now. I'm sure she doesn't have the horrible cramps, leg and back pain she had before. She also used to have horrible migraines for the entire week. She does still get the headaches, but not nearly as bad as they were.

I know the procedure is expensive and she and our (me, her, our mom and my friend all go to the same one lol)  GYN had to fight to get them to approve it, but they finally did. You might want to check it out and see how it sounds to you.
