Perimenpause has to have been the worst thing ever in my life. I would not wish this time on my worst enemies.
I try to think the thought millions of women have made it thru this time.... some have it harder than others. But they all survived it somehow, someway.
I wish all luck. I too just want this to be over.... and on the to the next part of my hormonal life.
I went through this last year. Mine happened mostly when I was trying to fall asleep. Right as I was about to drop off I would get this spurt of adrenaline - my heart would race, I would get like a rush in the head and it would last for an hour or more. Or on and off all night long. I went to the doctor and had a 24 holter monitor and an echocardiogram and all was normal. So of course I got the catch all diagnosis of stress and given some anti-anxiety meds. Those did help when it was bad at night. But slowly it started to lessen and then go away. When it started to lessen the only time I would notice it was around ovulation of my period. So I assumed it had to do with a hormone fluctuation. I was 45 at the time. Now this year, I got something new I need investigated. Seems like at least once per year now, I get a big something that is worrisome. I'm 46.
Heart palpiations and perimenopause and menopause seem to go hand in hand.
Remember when Oprah Winfrey talked about going to the Emergency when she felt that something was wrong (cannot recall if it was just heart palps or if it was with pains in the chest, or both) and it wasn't until she spoke with a doctor who deals with menopause that she got some answers. No one once looked to Ovarian hormone decline (specifically low levels of estradiol) until she spoke with Christianne Northrup, MD (doctor/speaker/writer on peri/menopause).
I frequently had chest pains just before my period and I have noticed the heart palps for years and years prior to my hysterectomy. Now when I get them, I take note of it since it tells me that I may need to either increase my dose of estradiol or that I need to change my estradiol patch sooner... (I use the Vivelle patch.. a bioidentical estradiol transdermal patch).
Years ago I had all of this checked out by a Cardiac doctor who told me I had benign tacycardia, but we did not discuss how ovarian levels of estradiol affects our heart and how palpatations can occur when things are not at optimal levels.
I strongly suggest you continue to research this information. Click on my screen name to find my journal entries on hormones. I also just spoke more in depth regarding all of this on some posts I have just answered here on this forum (can also be found thru my profile). I stand by Dr. Vliet's work. All due respect to Dr. Northrup, whose work has also been very helpful to me.
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I've learned about these complicated bodies of ours through her work. I have read so much information over the years (eight years now since thrown into surgical menopause) and Dr. Vliet's work has been the most helpful to me.
Good luck,
Mary
