Provera - spotting then no period

by nycjane, Jun 01, 2007 12:00AM
Hi,

My MD put me on Provera last September to because I was constantly spotting but not getting a period regularly.  He did an ultrasound as well as an endometrial biopsy first and everything was fine.   I am 48 years old and he felt that it was probably due to fluctuating hormones.  I stopped spotting and have been getting my period like clockwork 2 days after taking Provera for the 10 day course ever since then until this month.

This month I started spotting on the very first day I took the Provera.  I spotted for 2 days, then it stopped.  I kept taking the Provera for the 10 days.  It is now 7 days since I stopped the Provera and period.

I have never spotted in the 9 months I have been on the Provera till now.  Although I don't love taking the Provera, it had stopped all of the spotting which bothered me until now.  Now I am worried again.  Any idea what's going on with me and why this is happening?

Thankyou,

Jane

It is possible that your hormone levels of estrogen has lowered and  the Provera is not able to make the lining shed because the lining isn't being built up by the lower estrogen levels.  At some point, you will need both estrogen and
progesterone in order to have a period.  You can ask your doctor to check these two hormone levels after you have been off all hormones for a few weeks. If both are low, you will need to take both in order to have a period. It is also possible that your hormone levels are fluctuating quite widely and next month, it will cause you to have a bleed and you will stop spotting again.
