What age does menopause start

by crystaly, May 06, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, I,m curious as to what age I can expect to go through the menopause. I had a hysterectomy when I was 34yrs( ovaries left intact) and I am now 49 yrs . I haven't had any hot flushes or anything. Is it possible I,ve gone through it without noticing?
Thank you

A. It is possible you’ve gone through menopause already.  But the average age for women to go through menopause is 5l.4 years.  So it might be just around the corner for you.  One thing you can do is have your doctor run a blood test for FSH (follicle stimulating hormone).  This hormone goes up as menopause approaches.  While there is no absolute value for FSH that means you are in menopause, once the values rise to about 25 mIU/ml you are getting closer and when they are above 40, you are closer still.  But even if the values are elevated as I’ve described above, it may be a few years away before menopause finally comes.

In the meantime, think about doing some of the things that are important for women as they approach menopause, such as a bone density, a colonoscopy, a mammogram, an EKG of your heart and a discussion with your doctor about diet, which supplements to take (such as vitamins and calcium) and exercise.

Hi.  I am 46 yrs old and my periods started at 10.5yrs old.  My mother ended her period at 51 yrs old.  I am starting not to sleep at night and I get cold and hot flashes.  I was diagnose with high blood pressure and I am now on meds.  My periods are heavier and longer than usual and I do not have any interest in sex.  Is this all symtoms of menapause starting?  What can I do to help these symtoms if they are?  I haven't discussed menopause yet with a gyn.  I also had my second child at 42 yrs old and notice a great difference in my body.
