Worried about untrasounds

by whit53, Jun 10, 2006 12:00AM
Went to the Dr. complaining of pain on right side.  He ordered an ultrasound.  While the tech was doing the test she said I have 2 probable fibroids 2 cm and 3 cm.  And my lining is very thick.  Now, I not only have pain in my side but also in my very low back on the same side near my tailbone.  Can a thickened lining cause so much discomfort?I am 53 and still get my periods thaey are very long and very heavy have been for about 12 years.  Anxiously looking forward to menopause.

A. The fibroids you have are rather small, about the size of a quarter.  A thick lining that lasts a long time can become precancerous and over many years, even turn into cancer.  Usually when the lining is thick, doctors check the lining by doing an endometrial biopsy. That is an office test that uses a small, thin instrument to go inside the uterus and scrape a few cells out of the lining to be looked at under the microscope.

The thickened lining should not be a cause of discomfort.  Sometimes the uterus can get enlarged and cause a feeling of fullness or discomfort in the pelvic area.  Talk with your doctor about the ultrasound findings, whether or not you need to have the endometrial biopsy and what other things that can be done to understand why you are having pain.
