bleeding after menopause

by lmariei, Oct 25, 2006 12:00AM
I am 42 years old, and my kidneys failed at 38.  When I was 37, I stopped menstruating.  The doctors say it is because of kidney failure.  It has been 5 years since my last period. This past Thursday I suddenly started to bleed.  It was a very light period.  All I needed was a mini pad.  I was bleeding for about 5 days.  The blood was dark.  It was not like a normal period.  I went to my gyn, and now I have to go for a sonogram.  If something is abnormal with the sonogram, I will need a biopsy or a DNC.  Has this ever happened to any of you?  I'm a little worried.  I've been trying to find something about this on the internet.  All that keeps coming up is uterine cancer.  Can this be normal?  To bleed after 5 years?

you could have other reasons for bleeding, such as fibroids or polyps.  the fibroids probably would show on the U/S, but polpys wouldn't.  try not to google too much.  they give worst case scenarios, i'm guessing to make sure you consult a doctor.  i've scared myself silly a few times doing the same thing!  i recently had a microscopic amount of blood in my urine, and after surfing the web decided i must have bladder cancer.  after all, every website said that was the usual reason and the statistics looked awful.  the nurses at the surgi center told me lots of people are walking around with blood in their urine and since it's microscopic don't even know it - and most of them are fine.  i was.  long story - but you get the idea.  good luck :)
