Although I'm not a physician; I can't help but think that you are not becoming deaf.  Ringing in the ears is very common from what I hear (no punt intended).  I have no data to give you on this, but I do not believe that ringing in the ears is always a sign of impending hearing loss.  It could just be as simple as having a little fluid on the ear, hormonal changes.  It can be due to all sorts of things.  I think your experience in the pressure changes in the mountains may be the culprit.  In which case it can most likely clear up.

I think mine was likely due to maybe a possible scarring in my ears from having the surgury; but, who knows.  Last night, and today the ringing is "CRAZY", esp. since our weather changing so drastically from day to day.  Yesterday was in the upper 70's lots of sun shine.  Today, cloudy and 40%.  I think some people may also be sensitive to the barametric pressure changes in the atmosphere; not to mention menopausal / hormonal changes.

You know what?  Since the doctor did tell you that you have a little drainage going on, that's possibly the reason for your bout with the noizys.  I understand the frustration.  Don't get scared.  Everything will be alright.  Remember the doctors thouroughly checked you out and they did not find anything going on thats harmful.  Continue to follow your doctors advise and I believe you are going to get relief soon.

Have a peaceful and worry free day.

thanks for the reply.....so you were deaf from birth? and was lip reading and feeling vibrations? if so thats incredible for a 6 yr old.....but children do adapt to their bodies ....you must of just felt like normal that way till you were able to hear and then was like oh man so this is hearing!
am i going deaf?
im scared................the wooshing started in my RT ear and L ear was normal....then after a few days of noticing what my right ear was doing my L ear got this noise in it ....and it never went away...
i also noticed that the day before this came on i went up into the mountain and my L ear popped really hard.......but didnt hurt........then i became dizzy and later had a terrible headache , woke up with the noise in L ear.......next day.
the doc checked out my ears fully and no eardrum damage , brain Mri was normal and little bones in ear , normal.........there is a little fluid in L ear canal or mid ear....but not a whole lot .....
so doc put me on nasacort and ibuprofen.........helped bring down a lymphgland knot i had under my ear but the ringing is still there, i noticed the nasacort made it louder!
have you been through several testing?
i have........and they find nothing........im so thankful but yet frustrated that i have to live with this unending car alarm in my ear.........
its like a signal .........and i cant turn it off.....
my noise gets louder and sometimes is softer.......but lately it seems my RT ear is going in that direction.....it starts and then stops.......
what the heck is it? and the only explanation i can come up with is "peri menopause"
cause my heart races, sweats, feel my blood actually racing through my veins, itchy skin and aches all over....etc etc........tears....just me, but not in my old body!
if you ever find out what its from id like to know.........but being you lived like this for a long time i would think you would of found out why....
take care , M

Hi MelO326.  I have this ringing swishing sound in both ears.  I will be 45 in a couple of weeks and I do not know what it is like to not have it; but, it is aggravating nonetheless; esp. when lying down to go to sleep at night.

Sometimes, it is worse than other times. Especially, when I have a head cold, sinus, the few days leading up to my period, etc.  and there are times I will get lightheadnes and or dizzy spells that can last up to 3 days and nights....had that to happen just last week....don't know if it's related or not; but, like I mentioned before, I've had it all my life. I just hate it when the house starts swimming all around me when I lean my head to one side or the other! :  (

Maybe the ringing in my ears, may be due to the fact that when I was a small child, around the age of 6, I was found to be 100% deaf in both ears.  The doctor told my parents that I was lip reading and feeling vibrations thru the floor, etc. so extremely well that, that is why most people including my parents and teacher were not aware at the time that I was deaf; afterall, I was making straight A's in school.

As soon as my parents realized something was not right they immediately had me checked out by this specialist.  He also said that it appeared that I most likely became deaf shortly after birth if not born that way.  How he knew that, I've no idea.  Anyway, he immediately set me up for what was an experimental procedure at that time to have "ear tubes" sugicaly implanted to see if draining fluid would help my hearing to come back; but, that it was only experimental.  I was one of the first to have that procedure done at that time.  It worked!  I regained 100% of my hearing to this day by draining that fluid; however, the ringing still remains.

I just wanted to let you know that I understand how annoying this ringing, swishing sound can be.  I've heard over the years that there may be some natural remedies that may provide some people relief; but, personally I've never tried any myself.

I hope you feel better soon.  I am sorry I was not able to help you find the relief you needed; but know that I, as well as, many others do sympathize with what you are going through and have a general understanding of what you are feeling.

I wish you the best.

thanks for writing me back.....i too have the exact same thing....before the tinnitus in L ear i had a swooshing in RT ear only when laying down or bending over....thinking its my blood press or other....
i got all kinds of testing done too, brain MRI with contrast....and without, cartoid arteries checked , full blood panel, Thyroid, Sugar, Lupus ,Sjogrens, CBC .....xrays , Eco cardiogram, EKG's , etc etc....oh and several hearing tests..
well the L ear i do hear those cascadas.....i live in NC and we got them really bad last yr....yes thats the noise if i had to describe it.....scarey eh?
sometimes i even get a high pitched frequency noise too.........it seems as though my right ear is starting it now too........
its very scarey cause the only thing i can think of is my hormones .......i believe im in peri menopause according to my MD but i still have to go for testing with my OBGYN to make sure.....
my body has changed and its so hard to understand.......esp the emotional changes....little things just **** me off .......and pple in general......i use to let things roll off my back and i was very outspoken , still am ....but i get even angrier when i feel pple are not being respectful of my feelings or pple who dont take in to account others feelings........i kinda always been this way but now so even more .......

my anxiety has gone through the roof but i seem to lose it around the time of my cycle...

thanks again for your imput......take care , Mel

Hi Mel, sorry I missed your reply. I had all the tests done years ago, including an MRI to make sure that I didn’t have acoustic neuroma or other tumors. (I had also lost much of the hearing in my left ear, which is why they did so many tests. One thing’s for sure, I still hear the ringing!)

You mention a “swooshing” sound, and I recall experiencing something similar when the hearing problems just started. I would get a swooshing sound in my left ear, sometimes with bursts of clicking/popping sounds, especially when I first stood after sitting or lying down for some time. I was also getting a bit of vertigo, and I noticed that this usually happened after I had taken Sudafed or Sinus Tylenol. This was back in the days when they contained pseudoephedrine.

I asked the Dr. whether the drugs might have anything to do with it, and he basically laughed it off, but I wasn’t so sure. Anyway, I was happy to find that there were no tumors. Got a hearing aid, but rarely wore it, as it was uncomfortable, and didn’t help much anyway.

All that was some 13 years ago, and I’m getting by pretty well, or at least things don’t seem to be getting worse. I really ought to go in to have things checked again, though.

One other odd thing: For some reason, I can hear cicadas VERY well! I don’t know what it is, but they seem to “sing” at just the right pitch, and it comes into my left ear so loudly that it almost feels like I’m being stuck with a needle!

Cicadas. Go figure!

Hope they find a solution for you!

I recall reading that it is not uncommon for tinnitus to appear in women that are going through menopause, though I don’t recall any explanation being given. I’ve been suffering from tinnitus for years. At first it was only in the left ear, but later the right joined the chorus. Drives me batty sometimes!

There are many other things that can cause tinnitus, everything from excess wax to medications and even foods, including some cheeses, soy and soy products, chocolate, some types of alcohol, MSG, and citrus fruits. Aspartame (NutraSweet) has also been linked with the big T.

Here is a link to a (long) list of medications that can cause tinnitus as a side-effect:
