fibriod problems all of a sudden at 52?

by francies, Aug 18, 2007 02:20PM
I am 52 and naturally post menpoausal--no hormone therapy or birth control meds....l have been experiencing constant pelvic pressure, bloating, menstrual-like cramping, frequent urination and dull back ache for the last 4 months...no bowel or nausea problems.  I have read all about symptoms for ovarian cancer and that is what scared me. During my 40's, I had predictable periods, but with large clots and heavy bleeding for at least 2-3 days of each. I had seen a GYN about this and he didn't seemed concerned at all and I never saw him again about this. My last period was 16 months ago and another one year before that. Otherwise, no health problems other than high cholesterol. Weight is 220 --5'8". I had to find a new GYN because he and my other doctor had retired. My medical records seemed to have gotton lost in the shuffle--so my new gyn had no records to go by.

I was able to get an appointment with a GYN in practice for 25 years and she felt fibroids, and slight bladder prolapse, but otherwise couldn't feel anything abnormal. Paps have always been normal. She ordered an abdominal, transvaginal ultrasound, and the tech also checked my kidneys. Results: multiple fibroids, the largest being 1". Ovaries were clear...she said this shouldn't create this many problems and maybe I could have intestinal problems ?  I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy a year ago and....hiatal hernia and small hemorhoids..never bothersome, and no stomach problems or food allergies, so I am not thinking this is intestinal.  So she is going to send my ultrasound reports to my primary care..appointment in mid Sept.and said to check back with her in a couple months. She said fibroids would shrink, but I am so uncomfortable, I feel like I am pregnant. I have had 2 vaginal births....no problems...20+ years ago.

I don't know what to do? Would fibroids present all these symptoms now, when I never felt all this bloating, pressure before, etc.  back when I was having periods?
thank you

Fibroids occur in about 40% of women. They are common. Even if yours are small (and yours are small), if there are a lot of them, they can cause symptoms. So can your bladder if it is dropping (prolapse). Another cause of bloating can be the hormonal changes due to menopause. I

f everything comes out normal in your testing, talk with your doctor about a short course of hormones. If they are appropriate and acceptable to you, a short course will let you know if you feel better and that will mean hormones are the cause of your symptoms and not the intestinal and gyn ones. If they don't help, it would make sense to look closer at the other problems.
